Very few sires can claim to have won a Group 1 race from just 26 starters but KERMADEC proved his worth at Randwick on Saturday as MONTEFILIA took out the time-honoured Flight Stakes.
Being a late-maturing son of TEOFILO, KERMADEC’s stock were never expected to hit the ground running, so for him to have bagged his first Group 1 winner with a spring three-year-old filly is an exceptional achievement.
KERMADEC has the rare honour of having won Group 1 races under both handicap and weight-for-age conditions. Out of the current top 50 Australian sires, only FASTNET ROCK (70.9% winners/runners strike rate) and NICCONI (68.7% winners/runners strike rate) can make the same claim.
Proven Thoroughbreds has been quietly monitoring KERMADEC’s offspring since 2019 and at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale earlier this year we settled on a KERMADEC colt out of dual-city winning mare LOVE FOR RANSOM (RED RANSOM) – a half-sister to Group 1 placegetter FRENCH EMOTION.
LOVE FOR RANSOM has already thrown a Flemington 2YO winner by AL MAHER, a sire not typically renowned for producing 2YO winners.
The KERMADEC x LOVE FOR RANSOM colt has great bone and is a stylish mover. He is about to return to Joe Pride’s Warwick Farm stables and shares are available from $2,886.40 + GST.
Saturday’s results also highlighted NOT A SINGLE DOUBT’s credentials as a broodmare sire of juveniles, producing the winners of both the Gimcrack Stakes (ENTHAAR) and Breeders’ Plate (SHAQUERO).
