Wet weather is set to wreak havoc to race meetings in south east Queensland this week while in Sydney a 3yo filly is set to make her debut.
Racing Queensland has scheduled a poly-track meeting for the Sunshine Coast Friday night fixture in anticipation of the predicted rainfall which could limit Proven’s team to just MYSTIC MEADOW in the 1400m maiden. Stablemate MEASURE UP is likely to run should the meeting proceed on turf.
At Doomben on Saturday, RULE THE NIGHT is down to run over 1350m following a disappointing first-up performance at Eagle Farm on October 10. However the 3yo gelding will get conditions to suit, having won on a heavy (8) last preparation.
The aforementioned debutante is the Kerry Parker-trained SAKURIOUS. The daughter of MAURICE has accepted for Gosford on Thursday and tackles the 1000m Super Maiden Handicap on the back of a creditable trial on her home track of Kembla, where she ran 2nd to the race experienced COLD GIN.
This week’s SECTIONALS REVIEW article takes a look back at the performances of last week’s runners, including ALABAMA SHOWDOWN’s win and PRIVATE EYE’s narrow defeat in the Group 3 Harry White Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.

SIRE ON FIRE – MAURICE
A couple of weeks back we highlighted MAURICE’s resurgence following his COVID-induced hiatus from the Australian breeding landscape. And he continues to waste no time in re-establishing himself down under, with a quartet of stakes performed 3yos emerging in the last week, led by Wednesday’s Geelong Classic winner MURSHIDI.
BLACK BOOKER – SOUTHERN GRACE
Ran the best last 400m of the day when resuming in an 1100m maiden at Hawkesbury last week. She’s a spring 4yo now so has been given plenty of time to mature and on the evidence of this first-up run, she won’t be a maiden for much longer.
RUNNERS THIS WEEK
Gosford Thursday October 22
Super Maiden Handicap 1000m
SAKURIOUS
Kerry Parker/Alysha Collett
Comment: Well bred first starter likely to be faced with a rain-affected surface. In her latest trial she was seen finishing 2nd against older horses at Kembla Grange on October 7. Gives away race experience to most of her opposition here.
Sunshine Coast Friday October 23
Maiden Plate 1400m
MYSTIC MEADOW
Matt Hoysted/Jake Bayliss
Comment: Not disgraced last time out over 1200m in metropolitan company. Racing like she will appreciate getting out to 1400m and is afforded a drop in class here. Been given plenty of time to mature and gets her chance now to produce a peak performance third-up.
BM58 Handicap 1300m
MEASURE UP
Matt Hoysted/Jag Guthmann-Chester
Comment: Won at his second career start back in May but was virtually unsighted on resumption at the Gold Coast where he appeared to be run off his feet over 1200m. A likely steadier tempo here at 1300m gives him a chance of bouncing back but needs to.
Doomben Saturday October 24
R0-65 Handicap 1350m
RULE THE NIGHT
Matt Hoysted/Jag Guthmann-Chester
Comment: Over-raced first-up over 1300m at Eagle Farm and not surprisingly knocked up late. The beaten margin of 8.5 lengths is the concern as he was in the market. Needs to quickly rediscover the talent he revealed in his initial preparation as a winter 2yo.
Kembla Grange Saturday October 24
BM64 Handicap 1200m
WILD THOUGHTS
Kerry Parker/TBA
Comment: Resuming. Raced predominantly out of his grade last preparation in pursuit of a start in the Provincial Championships. Didn’t have the best of luck first-up at Hawkesbury in February. This looks a suitable race, albeit short of his ideal trip.
Queanbeyan Monday October 26
Maiden Plate 1460m
WEEKDAY FLYER
Kerry Parker/TBA
Comment: Caught the eye late on debut over 1300m at Kembla back in April and then ran 2nd over 1400m at the same track. On that form she will be fancied to break maiden ranks against this grade of opposition.
