This week will see the return of stakes-placed filly TERANGA among a handful of other runners from our Queensland stable.
TERANGA (pictured) took her owners from a Gold Coast maiden to Group 1 company in the space of just five starts in her first preparation so one would think there is still a fair amount of improvement to come with this daughter of QLD Oaks winner TINTO.
Co-trainers Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted have taken a conservative approach to start her summer campaign, by accepting for a 1350m BM65 Handicap at Doomben’s Wednesday meeting. Should she continue on her trajectory from last season, there is a plethora of stakes opportunities over the coming weeks.
As 2022 winds to a conclusion, it’s already been a year to remember for Proven Thoroughbreds in terms of stakes results. Last Saturday at Eagle Farm, TERANGA’s stablemate BETTER GET SET became our 10th stakes winner since January 1 when annexing the Listed Just Now Stakes (1300m).
Those 10 stakes wins account for an incredible 27% of our total winners for the year. Dare we say, it’s a stat that has caught us by surprise given how familiar we are with the level of luck required to win any race, let alone stakes company!
Away from the racetrack, we’ve been on the road inspecting yearlings at NSW stud farms ahead of what will be another bumper Magic Millions Gold Coast January Sale. Next week, we will be paying a visit to the QLD properties so we have all bases covered ahead of the 1200-plus catalogue.
Observing yearlings in a farm environment prior to the hustle and bustle of an auction complex is a vital component to our selection process and hopefully yields more success in years to come.
Currently we have just two horses remaining on our AVAILABLE HORSES page, so if you haven’t sorted a Christmas present yet, it might be worth considering one of the most unique gifts you can give – embarking on the journey of racehorse ownership. Both horses – DEEP FIELD x DON ELLA filly and VANCOUVER x BOTTICELLI ANGEL colt are now 2YOs which means less waiting around before they hit the racetrack!

Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners
Kilcoy Tuesday Dec 13
Maiden Plate 2076m:
AFFECTIONATE
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Emily Lang (a2)
Comment: In need of a confidence-boosting win after having no luck her past couple and finds a very moderate race here. If she runs the distance, she will be hard to beat.
Doomben Wednesday Dec 14
BM65 Handicap 1350m:
TERANGA
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Jaden Lloyd (a1.5)
Comment: Talented mare resuming. Over achieved in her first preparation, winning twice and placing at stakes level. Was always going to be a better horse next time around so will be interesting to see how she runs fresh here. Only negative is 1350m might be a bit short.
Ipswich Thursday Dec 15
F&M BM65 Handicap 1200m:
MERSEYSIDE
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Jaden Lloyd (a1.5)
Comment: Honest mare who always runs well fresh. Best form is over 1400m and yet to race at Ipswich. Each-way hope.
Sunshine Coast Friday Dec 16
Class 2 Handicap 1400m:
VANTAN EXPRESS
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/TBA
Comment: Scratched from a wide draw last week. Won two in a row here this time last year but hasn’t raced in more than seven months so will likely need this hit-out.
