Racing is a funny game. The ups and downs make the stock market look like tiddly winks.
Last week 9 gallopers from Caulfield in the south to Eagle Farm in the north, went to the barriers bedecked in the black and lime green. Apart from PRIVATE EYE’S heroic second in the Group 2 Lawrence Stakes and BROADWAY STREET’s nose defeat, the scoresheet was unscathed.
That happens. Ironically for the upcoming 7 days, Proven will be represented by just two runners and the Racing Gods being the twisted, volatile characters they are, will likely conspire to produce a pair of victories!
On paper, both last week’s Blackbooker COLUMBIA BLUE (pictured) and the maiden IN CIRCLES, look strong chances in their respective assignments. The former confronts BM78 company again following a desperately unlucky and close third over the same Randwick 1200m course a fortnight ago.
IN CIRCLES, a rangy daughter of TORONADO also prepared by Joe Pride, has a pair of placings on her CV from 3 starts. After a solid, first up third at Gosford over 1100m first up, she steps out to 1250m at Newcastle on Tuesday.
Nine trialists over the past week suggest our racing numbers will be elevated in coming weeks but in the short term, go “Blue” and “Lopez”!
This week’s SECTIONALS REVIEW article, penned by our form analyst Nic Ashman, analyses the merit of PRIVATE EYE’s first-up run in the Lawrence as well as the return of promising 4yo BROADWAY STREET.

SIRE ON FIRE – STAY INSIDE
This young son of the freakish EXTREME CHOICE is making his own mark at stud with his oldest progeny having just turned three. In the last 4 days STAY INSIDE has sired 3 winners and produced a stakes 2nd (BLUE DOOR in the Rosebud). His winners were the debutants SCHUMACHER (Kembla), HARRY LIME (Wyong) and the second starter JAILHOUSE (Ballarat).
BLACK BOOKER – BROADWAY STREET
Showed promise last prep winning first up and resumed last Thursday at Newcastle with the narrowest of defeats. From a wide gate was forced a pair or two further back than hoped, and may not have perceived the winner who secured a dream rails run to snatch victory. Ran the 1400m out strongly and will be hard to toss in similar company when he appears next.
RUNNERS THIS WEEK
Randwick Saturday August 22
BM78 Handicap 1200m
COLUMBIA BLUE
Joe Pride/Nash Rawiller
Comment: Has been the proverbial model of consistency in three runs this campaign with a short head defeat at Rosehill, victory at the same track and a luckless 3rd at Randwick last start. Meets the same grade over the same track and distance here with Nash Rawiller reunited on top. Another poor draw that will hopefully be offset by the affected ground late in the day.
Newcastle-Beaumont Tuesday August 25
Maiden Handicap 1250m
IN CIRCLES
Joe Pride/TBA
