Giant 5yo THEWAYWEARE burst back to winning form with a dominant six length disposal of his rivals on Goulburn Cup day.

Relishing the firm conditions and the rise to 2300m, the gelding showed superior stamina to run his rivals into the ground, posting a six and a quarter length margin on the line.

For connections it’s been a frustrating 12 months with the son of Thewayyouare who had put together a trio of wins on the trot this time last year. Indeed, this very race he won exactly a year ago after a similar inspired front riding ride by Brenton Avdulla. Under Blake Spriggs, the horse cleared out to lead Sunday’s contest by as much as eight lengths at the midway mark before sustaining his run to the finish line.

Wet tracks, an illness and badly-needed conditioning runs over shorter trips had soiled his record since last year’s successes. However the horse now boasts a better record of 18 starts for 4 wins all at 2000m and beyond.

Trainer John Thompson has no lofty targets in sight but was confident he’d turned the horse around following a promising third behind subsequent Rosehill winner Pursuit of Honour in the Stayers Final at Hawkesbury on Ladies’ Day. The victory was PROVEN’S 21st for 2016.
