The classy SCALLOPINI (pictured) is scheduled to return to racing this Saturday at the Gold Coast.

The nine-time winner is the top weighted runner in the Listed Goldmarket (1200m) as he embarks on a winter campaign that will hopefully culminate in a Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap berth.

Co-trainers Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted have expertly managed the gelding to date and another victory on Saturday would see the son of SNITZEL take his earnings past $500,000.

Meanwhile at Gosford’s new standalone meeting, STOCKMAN is a chance of lining up in the Listed Gosford Gold Cup (2100m) but is currently 20th in the order of entry so has also been entered for the BM78 over the same distance as a precaution.

Despite losing GOTTA KISS to motherhood last month, Proven Thoroughbreds has still produced a steady flow of stakes performers, most recently Queensland Guineas winner PRIVATE EYE and DALRELLO STAKES runner-up STELLAR MAGIC.

Stable stalwart RECKLESS CHOICE is also set to resume in the coming weeks while 2YOs VANTAN EXPRESS, THATFEELSBETTER & NEXT TO EXCEL will get their chance to progress to feature races during the Queensland winter carnival.

BLACKBOOKER

MACCOMO resumed with a game third over 1200m at Goulburn last month. He’s a horse that improves with racing and both wins to date have come over 1400m. Appears to be in for a good prep and one which will hopefully see him progress to metropolitan company.

Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners

Eagle Farm Wednesday May 5

C,G & E Maiden Handicap 1200m:

VANTAN EXPRESS

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Ben Thompson

Comment: 2YO taking on older horses on a deteriorating track will be a good test for this promising colt. Finished a sound third on debut over 1000m and looks suited by the distance rise.

Gatton Friday May 7

Maiden Plate 1100m/QTIS 3YO Maiden Plate 1100m:

YOU CHOOSE

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Baylee Nothdurft

Comment: Disappointed in two runs to date despite showing ability at the trials. This easier than last start and should be improved for the run.

Gold Coast Saturday May 8

Listed Goldmarket 1200m:

SCALLOPINI

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Ben Thompson

Comment: Veteran sprinter who rarely runs a bad race. Carries the top weight first-up so may feel the pinch late but has a clear class edge on his rivals.

Gosford Saturday May 8

Listed Gosford Gold Cup 2100m/BM78 Handicap 2100m:

STOCKMAN

Joe Pride/TBA

Comment: Looks ready to fire third-up following a pair of strong runs over shorter trips. Likely to get some rain which will greatly enhance his chances. A genuine speed would also be preferable.

Goulburn Sunday May 9

Maiden Handicap 1600m:

CAPTURED IN TIME

Joe Pride/Jay Ford

Comment: Got too far back last time and had to come to the extreme outside before finishing a creditable fourth over 1400m. Racing as though he is looking for this trip and should appreciate getting onto a big track.

BM58 Handicap 1500m:

BOMBARDEO

John Bateman/Keagan Latham

Comment: Motored home into second two starts back then was ridden too close last time and raced ungenerously. Can bounce back with the right run.

Sunshine Coast Sunday May 9

QTIS 2YO Maiden Plate 1000m:

THATFEELSBETTER

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Baylee Nothdurft

Comment: Debutant who trialled impressively behind stakes winner MISS HIPSTAR. Probably wants a touch further than 1000m but looks above average.
