The Queensland winter carnival moves back to Doomben this Saturday where Proven Thoroughbreds will be represented by a trio of stakes runners.

JJ Atkins aspirant STROLL takes her place in the Listed Bill Carter Stakes (1200m) – a race we have some unfinished business in after GOTTA KISS was an unlucky third as favourite two years ago.

Similarly, CONTEMPTUOUS (pictured) will be looking to avenge KYLEASE’s narrow defeat in last year’s Listed Chief De Beers (1110m), when he lines up in the same race for his stakes debut. The son of RUBICK has certainly earned his graduation to stakes company with an exemplary record of seven wins and four placings from just 12 starts.

Then it is over to 3YO filly TERANGA, who will be chasing a Queensland Oaks berth in the Group 2 Doomben Roses (2000m).

It has already been a season to remember for Proven Thoroughbreds with six stakes winners but we would certainly welcome any additions to that tally on Saturday!

On the following weekend at Eagle Farm, we will have both PRIVATE EYE and SCALLOPINI in the Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m). Both horses were given trials this week in preparation for the $700k weight-for-age contest.

BLACK BOOKER

MERSEYSIDE is closing in on her second career win, evidenced by her two runs back this campaign. First-up she was a fast-finishing second over 1200m at the Sunshine Coast and then at her latest outing she was again runner-up on the Sunshine Coast’s poly track over 1400m. She is crying out for a longer trip now. The last time she raced beyond 1400m was over a mile at the end of her last preparation and she finished only 4.8 lengths off GYPSY GODDESS, arguably the best 3YO staying filly in Queensland at the minute.

Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners

Sunshine Coast Wednesday May 18

BM78 Handicap 1100m:

BETTER GET SET

Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/Jaden Lloyd (a2)

Comment: Ran home resolutely at Eagle Farm first-up to finish third. That was her first run in more than six months so will have taken a good deal improvement from that and can utilise barrier one here.

Doomben Saturday May 21

Listed Bill Carter Stakes 1200m:

STROLL

Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/Boris Thornton

Comment: Was doing her best work late in testing conditions at the Gold Coast first-up. Better for that and back to her own sex here. Right in the mix.

Listed Chief De Beers 1110m:

CONTEMPTUOUS

Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/Jaden Lloyd (a)

Comment: Resuming galloper shooting for five straight wins. Continues to rise to the challenge and has earned an introduction to stakes grade but given no favours from the wide barrier.

Group 2 The Roses 2000m:

TERANGA

Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/Jaden Lloyd (a)

Comment: Promising filly coming off a second placing in stakes company at Doomben. Racing like she is looking for this trip now and will relish the wet track conditions. Will need luck from the draw however.

Hawkesbury Tuesday May 24

Maiden Handicap 1300m:

FORTIVACI

Joe Pride/TBA

Comment: Performed above expectations on debut when finishing fifth at Goulburn. Was very green in the run home but like the way he hit the line late.
