It’s Golden Slipper day ‘take two’ this weekend after relentless rain forced officials to postpone the event by seven days.

Proven Thoroughbreds was set to be represented by the exciting PRIVATE EYE in the opening race on the card – the Listed Darby Munro Stakes (1200m) – until a deluge rendered the track unsafe for racing.

Sydney’s big wet is forecast to ease by Tuesday evening with mostly warm conditions predicted for the rest of the week.

South-east Queensland was hit by a similar amount of rainfall over the weekend but the weather has since improved with temperatures of up to 31 degrees expected in the lead-up to Saturday’s meeting at Doomben.

Fortunately, the sunshine poked through for last Sunday’s yearling parade at Kolora Lodge where more than 100 of our clients came to inspect the next generation of racehorses heading to the Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted stable.

Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners

Rosehill Saturday March 27

Listed Darby Munro Stakes 1200m:

PRIVATE EYE

Joe Pride/Regan Bayliss

Comment: Returns from a freshen-up shooting for a sixth consecutive win. Has earned his shot at this grade and is proven on a wet track.

Doomben Saturday March 27

Class 3 Plate 1110m:

CONTEMPTUOUS

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Ben Thompson

Comment: Will need the track to dry out to warrant running after labouring in the heavy conditions last time out. Still managed to finish third on that occasion and was a month between runs. Look for him to bounce back.

3YO QTIS Handicap 1350m:

BETTER GET SET

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Ben Thompson

Comment: Enormous effort to finish fourth in the QTIS Jewel at the Gold Coast where she beat home some stakes class horses. Looks in this up to her ears based on that run.

2YO QTIS Handicap 1110m:

STELLAR MAGIC

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Ben Thompson

Comment: Promising 2YO ridden like a good thing at Grafton first-up and got the money. Expecting her to come off the speed here and be hard to beat again.

Gold Coast Saturday March 27

Class 5 Handicap 1200m:

TOO HOT TO HOLD

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/TBA

Comment: Seasoned campaigner returning from a spell. Yet to win first-up and stretched out to 1800m last preparation so will probably find this a bit sharp.

3YO Maiden Plate 1800m:

TRAVOLI

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Jag Guthmann-Chester

Comment: Looks ready to break his maiden. Has improved with every run this time in and is racing as though the 1800m won’t be a problem.

2YO Maiden Handicap 1400m:

SECRET TALES

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Jag Guthmann-Chester

Comment: Made some late ground on debut in a slowly-run race over 1200m. Might get conditions to suit rising to 1400m here.

Sunshine Coast Sunday March 28

Class 2 Plate 1000m:

CONTEMPTUOUS

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/TBA

Comment: Will need the track to dry out to warrant running after labouring in the heavy conditions last time out. Still managed to finish third on that occasion and was a month between runs. Look for him to bounce back.

Maiden Handicap 1200m:

CENTRAL AMERICA

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/TBA

Comment: Slow into stride here last start when first-up from a long break. Made up solid ground in the straight to narrowly miss a place. Wants all of 1400m.
