SCALLOPINI’s Melbourne sojourn continues on Saturday at Caulfield as he lines up in the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m).

The veteran gelding was a desperately close runner-up in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield last month and is in with a big chance again.

Damian Lane takes the reins from barrier seven in a field of nine that includes Group 1 winners REGAL POWER, MR BRIGHTSIDE and STREETS OF AVALON.

SCALLOPINI is a part of a three-pronged attack on the meeting for Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted, with UNCOMMON JAMES (Listed Regal Roller Stakes) and SHE’SGOTTHEBOOM (Listed Quezette Stakes) also engaged.

Meanwhile, on Sunday August 21 Proven Thoroughbreds and Joe Pride will host an open morning for clients at Warwick Farm. Details on the event can be found HERE.

BLACK BOOKER

THINK ABOUT IT couldn’t have been more impressive on debut at Kembla Grange. We don’t often select winners as our blackbooker but made an exception in this case because we think the horse is well above average. Trainer Joe Pride has identified a 1350m Class 1 at Wyong next week as the gelding’s next start and should he make the notoriously difficult leap out of maiden company and win, think we are entitled to start getting excited about his future.

Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners

Doomben Wednesday Aug 10

Maiden Handicap 1200m:

BETTER YET

Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/Ben Thompson

Comment: First starter from a wide gate around Doomben so hard to assess but has been given plenty of time to mature and shown enough at the trials to suggest she will run well.

Ipswich Friday Aug 12

BM58 Handicap 1350m:

MY SHAMANA

Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/Boris Thornton

Comment: Won first-up here last preparation but will need luck from an awkward barrier. Yet to run a bad race in her five career starts.

Rosehill Saturday Aug 13

Midway Handicap 1400m:

MACCOMO

Kerry Parker/Tyler Schiller

Comment: Solid run first-up and then faded second-up after working to find the lead. Generally takes a few runs to hit his peak and should be close to ready third-up over this distance.

Caulfield Saturday Aug 13

Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes 1400m:

SCALLOPINI

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Damian Lane

Comment: Went down narrowly in the Bletchingly in a brave performance. Can only improve up to 1400m and this race looks no harder.

Sunshine Coast Sunday Aug 14

Maiden Handicap 1200m:

EXTORTIONIST

Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/TBA

Comment: Got back on a leader-bias track here and never figured on debut. Inclined to forgive.

CLASSIC BOOM

Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/TBA

Comment: Was doing her best work late against the bias here at her first start. Will be improved for the run and looks a winning hope.
