The unofficial start of the Queensland Winter Carnival is this Saturday at Doomben where Proven Thoroughbreds will have a quartet of stakes runners.

PRIVATE EYE (Tails Stakes), STELLAR MAGIC (Mick Dittman Plate), CANADIAN DANCER and TERANGA (Princess Stakes) will fly the Proven flag at the meeting.

We had mixed fortunes with barriers at acceptance time on Wednesday. PRIVATE EYE was handed the visitors draw in 19 however the remaining trio drew between 1 and 6 in their respective races.

It is hoped Saturday’s program can set the tone for what is shaping as a busy carnival for our team with the likes of SCALLOPINI, PALAZZO SPIRIT, STROLL, INVINCIANO, BETTER GET SET, CONTEMPTUOUS and FETCH also expected to step out in the coming weeks.

Other runners this week include the resuming RUBINOCCHI at Canterbury on Wednesday, and last start winner SECRET TALES at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.

BLACK BOOKER

HE KNOWS came from a long way back to just miss third place at Doomben last week. A similar class of race over a touch further looks made to order for this 4YO gelding.

Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners

Canterbury Wednesday April 20

BM64 Handicap 1100m:

RUBINOCCHI

Joe Pride/Sam Clipperton

Comment: Talented filly resuming. Brings some strong formlines for this but hardly ideal striking a heavy (9) track first-up from a spell.

Ipswich Wednesday April 20

BM65 Handicap 1680m:

DON’T DESPAIR

Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/Jaden Lloyd (a2)

Comment: Too bad to be true last time when dropping out at the Gold Coast last time. Two runs prior this campaign had merit and is worth another chance.

Doomben Saturday April 23

Listed Tails Stakes 1600m:

PRIVATE EYE

Joe Pride/Ryan Maloney

Comment: Didn’t pick up in the very heavy conditions after a wide run in the Doncaster last month. Given no favours by the barrier gods again here but has a big class edge on this grade of opposition.

Listed Mick Dittman Plate 1110m:

STELLAR MAGIC

Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/Ben Thompson

Comment: Consistent filly chasing an elusive stakes win. Looked good in a recent trial and flies fresh but will need to be at her best to be winning.

Listed Princess Stakes 1600m:

CANADIAN DANCER

Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/Ben Thompson

Comment: Really motored late to win at Ipswich last start. Will relish the mile and hopefully a genuine tempo.

TERANGA

Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/Jaden Lloyd (a2)

Comment: Two time winner from three starts and proven over this distance. Has shown great tenacity in both wins and looks one of the leading chances here.

Sunshine Coast Sunday April 24

QTIS 3YO Handicap 1600m:

SECRET TALES

Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/Samantha Collett

Comment: Strong winner over 1300m here last Sunday. Has previously won on the quick back up and gives the impression 1600m won’t be an issue.
