Three-year-old gelding Globeel was put down at Goulburn on Tuesday after suffering a broken near hind leg in the meeting’s second race.

Globeel, a son of Zabeel trained by John Thompson, had only one previous start before his tragic demise. At the same track 11 days before, he impressed with a closing fourth over 1000 metres.

The step up to 1200 metres for Globeel’s second career run looked to be the perfect progression but things took a turn for the worse when jockey Jeff Penza was forced to dismount soon after the field jumped away.

Globeel failed to finish the course and was put down. Sadly it is days such as these that must be accepted as part of the racing game. Our thoughts are with the owners and all who were involved with the horse’s development and training.
