There are plenty of good reasons why Proven Thoroughbreds purchased 3 yearlings out of SHAMARDAL mares in 2025.
The most obvious one being PRIVATE EYE. He is out of the SHAMARDAL mare CONFIDENTIAL QUEEN whose 4 foals to race have all won, the latest being the Proven-Pride 3yo KING’S SECRET at Rosehill last Saturday.
Among the other 236 stakes performers out of SHAMARDAL mares are the likes of IMPERATRIZ, CEOLWULF, CONVERGE, DEVIL NIGHT and MOVE TO STRIKE.
A less obvious piece of information is that SHAMARDAL mares produce stakes performers at a superior rate to any other broodmare sire in the southern hemisphere:

The above list is made even more compelling when you consider the following:
- SHAMARDAL’s Australasian strike rate actually sits at 13.6%
- Almost a quarter of the stakes winners out of O’REILLY mares can be attributed to one sire – SAVABEEL
So there is a clear gap between SHAMARDAL and the chasing pack in the broodmare sire rankings.
Of Proven’s 3 acquisitions out of SHAMARDAL mares this year, only one has a Group 1 pedigree – the XTRAVAGANT x PUZZLE filly with Joe Pride.
PUZZLE is a half-sister to champion filly ENGLISH and has to date produced 2 winners from 3 to race (the other foal died after placing in a Sydney metropolitan 2YO race).
Everything looks good on paper, but how is the filly progressing? Experienced horseman Daniel Robinson had this to say after completing her early education:
“I enjoyed breaking this filly in. She’s got a lovely quiet nature about her. She’s quite a big filly but has a nice bit of athleticism about her – she doesn’t hit the ground hard when she moves and she’s fluent on her feet. She’s sensitive to the rider but still has so much bravery about her, she’s found everything very easy.”
