Always challenging for a horse to claim a victory immediately after breaking their maiden. In the case of UNDERHAND on Tuesday at Gatton, disposing of the BM62 rivals was arguably a far superior performance to winning her first race one month prior over the same 860m short course.

An effusive Emily Lang who steered the WINNING RUPERT filly on both occasions, was very complimentary post-race.

“Unlike last start when leading, she actually relaxed outside the leader today really nicely. It was much better for her to have something to chase as it kept her on the right lead leg and balanced up a lot better than last time.

“Coming to the turn I sort of asked her to go through her gears and I was actually really impressed with the way she gave a bit of a kick today and put them away easily,” said the promising apprentice.

Co-trainer Steve O’Dea also felt it was a more accomplished effort than the maiden breakthrough whilst the 3YO’s owners were tickled pink to earn another $29k, the bulk of which was another significant QTIS bonus of $18k (plus $11k base prizemoney), providing further evidence of how lucrative this scheme can be, especially for fillies.

With less than a week remaining in Season 22/23, the Proven winners tally has climbed to 46 with the black & lime green colours to be worn by another 8 runners before season’s end.
