Stoutly-bred gelding Thewayweare continued a recent run of winners for Proven Thoroughbreds at Goulburn on Sunday by breaking his maiden in a class one event over 2130 metres.

Thewayweare has been a work in progress for trainer John Thompson but at the horse’s eighth career start all the pieces of the puzzle fell together.

Backing-up from a sound fourth over 2400 metres at Kembla Grange, Thewayweare wore down his opposition in the straight to salute by 1-1/4 lengths under the riding of Jeff Penza.

The son of US-bred stallion Thewayyouare started a $2.40 favourite in the 10-horse field and won accordingly.

Having placed over 1400 metres first-up this preparation, Thewayweare’s ideal distance is yet to be revealed however Sunday’s breakthrough win represented an important progression in the four-year-old’s career.

John will look to place Thewayweare in a similar grade contest next start but in the meantime the horse’s patient owners will savour the win!

It has been a stellar weekend for Proven Thoroughbreds after a dual-state double on Saturday courtesy of Gamblestown at Rosehill and Candika at Doomben.

Proven Thoroughbreds now has 22 winners for the calendar year, including seven since October 5.
