PRIVATE EYE, IN FLIGHT, FLYING BANDIT and OTONO comprise a four-pronged attack for Proven Thoroughbreds at Randwick’s Chelmsford Stakes meeting this Saturday.

The remarkable PRIVATE EYE lines up in the Group 2 Tramway (1400m) following his dominant first-up victory at Caulfield in the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) while IN FLIGHT (pictured) takes on the Group 2 Concorde Stakes (1000m) after a trio of successive stakes victories in three different states over the winter.

OTONO, a winner of her last two for the Kerry Parker stable, resumes in the 1400m Midway before stablemate FLYING BANDIT takes the first step towards a potential spring cups campaign in the 1600m BM94 Handicap.

Twenty-four hours prior to Randwick’s feature meeting, Proven will have another stakes runner in COSMONOVA at Wyong. The half-sister to top class mare MAGIC TIME gets her shot at some valuable black type in the Group 3 Mona Lisa Stakes after running on strongly into third last Saturday at Rosehill.

We will also be well represented in Brisbane this weekend with five runners across Doomben and the Gold Coast, headed by the in-form NAVAL TRADER.

It’s a long way from a Gold Coast Maiden to Black Type events, especially when you’ve just turned four, however, the acceleration shown by debutant LARADO last Saturday suggests better wins await.

Prepared by Matt Hoysted, the TORONADO gelding was not only impressive to the eye. His time was exceptional, nearly half a second quicker than the Class 6 over the same 1000m trip on the day and 1.7secs sharper than the other Maiden run immediately after. At this stage LARADO is likely to head back to the races later this month for a Class 1 event at Eagle Farm.

SIRE ON FIRE – TOO DARN HOT

Always interesting to see how a sires’ first crop fare once thrust into open company as 4yos. The early signs for TOO DARN HOT’s progeny are promising with two impressive 4yo stakes winners last Saturday in the shape of TROPICUS and TOO DARN DISCREET.

BLACK BOOKER – ROCK THE SUNRISE

Missed the kick and travelled a clear last in a very slowly run 1350m contest a week ago. Came widest on the turn which is traditionally hard to do at Doomben but managed to finish within 1.75 lengths of the winner who had a picnic in front. Looks ready to win over a bit further next start.

Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners

Ipswich Wednesday September 3

Maiden Plate 1100m

WATERTIGHT

Matt Hoysted/Jag Guthmann-Chester

Comment: Beautifully bred, very lightly raced 4yo who’s trialled well enough to be very competitive in a race like this.

Warwick Farm Wednesday September 3

BM72 Handicap 2200m

ELLE HUDSON

Joe Pride/Alysha Collett

Comment: Hard fit, dour stayer well placed back at his home track though is going from a Heavy 10 to a much firmer surface.

Wyong Friday September 5

G3 Mona Lisa Stakes 1350m

COSMONOVA

Joe Pride/Alysha Collett

Comment: Genuine mare on a quick backup in quest of stakes racing. First time beyond 1200m so will need a good deal of luck from a wide draw in a capacity field.

Doomben Saturday September 6

Class 6 Plate 1350m

NAVAL TRADER

Matt Hoysted/Luke Dempsey

Comment: Second up after a slashing return in open company, motoring home from the rear to the narrowest of defeats. Well placed back to a class 6.

BM78 Handicap 1200m

HEYOKA

Matt Hoysted/Winona Costin

Comment: Not suited to the Ipswich circuit when rolled as a short priced favourite first-up. Lightly raced mare, a winner at this track and distance so can bounce back.

BM70 Handicap 1615m

SECOND SUN

Matt Hoysted/Jag Guthmann-Chester

Comment: Emerging stayer getting out to a mile second-up. Better suited at a bigger track but will relish the rise in trip.

Gold Coast Saturday September 6

Maiden Handicap 1200m

SMUDGED

Matt Hoysted/TBA

Comment: Slow maturing, well bred 4yo making her belated debut. Looks suited over a touch further but has ability.

TINTAURA

Matt Hoysted/TBA

Comment: The two runs in her opening preparation were sound. Hopefully, stronger and more seasoned first-up this time in.

Randwick Saturday September 6

G2 Tramway Stakes 1400m

PRIVATE EYE

Joe Pride/Nash Rawiller

Comment: Quality galloper whom age is not wearying. Bolted in at Caulfield first up and looks beautifully placed under the set weights and penalties conditions.

G2 Concorde Stakes 1000m

IN FLIGHT

Joe Pride/Jay Ford

Comment: Took her career to another level last preparation with a trio of stakes triumphs. Tackling the big boys here but a terrific mare and will appreciate any give in the ground.

BM94 Handicap 1600m

FLYING BANDIT

Kerry Parker/Jay Ford

Comment: Promising stayer on a spring Cups campaign. Has the talent to run a bold race first-up.

Midway Handicap 1400m

OTONO

Joe Pride/Jason Collett

Comment: Has built a nice record on provincial tracks so takes on Midway/city company first up. Look for her to be finishing hard late.
