Talented mare BETTER GET SET looks poised to return to the winners circle at Doomben on Sunday.

The daughter of BETTER THAN READY produced a slashing run first-up over an unsuitably short 1000m when runner-up behind stablemate CONTEMPTUOUS.

Up to 1200m and back in grade to a class 2 event, the 4YO has plenty in her favour as she attempts to convert her strong formlines into a third career victory at start number 14.

Last preparation she beat home subsequent Group winner CRIMINAL DEFENCE before finishing within 2.5 lengths of another well credentialled stablemate in TUMBLER RIDGE. The campaign ended with a commendable 6th in the Listed Princess Stakes (1630m).

Though unplaced in three previous second-up runs, BETTER GET SET should appreciate the drop in class on Sunday at Doomben where she could be joined by resuming stablemate THINK GLORY.

Proven’s other notable runners in the week ahead include RED RUBI, aiming for her fourth win in five starts at Doomben’s midweek meeting.

BLACKBOOKER

MERSEYSIDE is a filly with plenty of promise. Though unplaced first-up, her run was excellent, making up significant ground from the back in a slowly run race. Despite winning on debut over 1200m last preparation, she’s going to get over much further and is one to keep an eye on during the spring.

Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners

Doomben Wednesday September 22

Class 4 Handicap 1200m:

RED RUBI

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Stephanie Thornton

Comment: Far from disgraced in Saturday grade at Eagle Farm last start when beaten just over two lengths. Form would suggest she races better at Doomben so look for her to hit back hard.

Ipswich Thursday September 23

F&M Class 3 Handicap 1200m:

RICH LISTER

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Stephanie Thornton

Comment: Posted wide at the Gold Coast and that told late as she finished 1.5 lengths astern of the winner. Loves Ipswich and has found a suitable race to recapture winning form.

Sunshine Coast Friday September 24

BM62 Handicap 1300m/CG&E Class 1 Handicap 1200m:

HE KNOWS

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Baylee Nothdurft

Comment: Beaten in the shadows of the post at the Sunshine Coast last outing. Has good form on rain-affected going but is yet to see anything worse than a good 4 in three runs this preparation. Forecast would suggest he’s going to strike a firm deck again.

Maiden Plate 1200m:

THINK GLORY

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/TBA

Comment: Resuming. Showed some potential last campaign but was her own worst enemy as she had a tendency to over-race. Has looked much more tractable at the trials this time in, winning her latest over 1000m. Chance.

Nowra Friday September 24

BM66 Handicap 1000m:

SO YOU SHOP

Kerry Parker/TBA

Comment: Went out way too hard first-up over 1200m and not surprisingly dropped out to finish last, though only 5.5 lengths off the winner. Back to 1000m should help him settle and save his best work for the business end of the race.

Doomben Sunday September 26

Class 2 Handicap 1200m:

BETTER GET SET

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/TBA

Comment: Consistent mare who finds a winnable race second-up. Yet to figure in three second-up runs but has a distinct class edge in this grade.

Maiden Plate 1200m:

THINK GLORY

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/TBA

Comment: Resuming. Showed some potential last campaign but was her own worst enemy as she had a tendency to over-race. Has looked much more tractable at the trials this time in, winning her latest over 1000m. Chance.
