STOCKMAN gets a chance to show his wares in the Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on Saturday as he continues his march towards a potential Melbourne Cup berth.
The TAVISTOCK gelding was allocated 54kg for the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup on Tuesday which puts him in a great position to start in the time-honoured events.
But first he will need to prove he has retained his form from last preparation with a strong performance in Saturday’s set weights and penalties contest.
Of course the other factor trainer Joe Pride will take into consideration is the weather. Whilst STOCKMAN is likely to get a rain-affected track this weekend, there are no guarantees of wet tracks in Melbourne next month.
Meanwhile, our Queensland team is on a high after grand campaigner SCALLOPINI won his fourth stakes race in dominant fashion at Flemington last Saturday. The 8YO son of SNITZEL was one of four metropolitan winners for the Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted stable on the day.
The O’Dea/Hoysted juggernaut will look to continue their momentum this Saturday when consistent mare BETTER GET SET resumes in either the Pink Ribbon Cup (1200m) or Class 3 Plate (1200m) at the Gold Coast.

Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners
Doomben Wednesday Sep 14
Class 4 Handicap 1200m:
RICH LISTER
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Boris Thornton
Comment: Copped a head knock in the gates and raced wide when plain first up at Doomben. Then loomed up to win at Ipswich but didn’t fully let go in soft conditions. Should be ready to fire third-up onto a drier track.
Randwick Saturday Sep 17
Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes 2000m:
STOCKMAN
Joe Pride/Sam Clipperton
Comment: Up to a suitable distance third-up and likely to get his preferred track conditions. Strikes a hot field but is well weighted and has won over this track and distance.
Gold Coast Saturday Sep 17
Pink Ribbon Cup 1200m/Class 3 Plate 1200m:
BETTER GET SET
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/TBA
Comment: Resuming. Generally races well fresh and her only previous run here yielded a fast finishing fourth behind SIMPLY FLY in a $500k 1200m race. First-up last preparation she was third behind subsequent stakes winner BOOMNOVA.
