Former Victorian-based jockey Daniel Moor will have his first rides for Proven Thoroughbreds and Matt Hoysted this Saturday.

Moor, a multiple Group 1 winner, had his first engagements in Queensland at Ipswich on Wednesday and hit the ground running with a $19 winner and $13 placegetter.

Moor’s arrival comes just weeks after another accomplished jockey – Ben Thompson – returned to the sunshine state following a stint in Hong Kong. Both riders are welcome additions to the south-east Queensland riding ranks, which have been thin for some time.

At Doomben on Saturday, Hoysted has booked Moor to ride TOWN CRIER (pictured) and OCEAN ZAR, both of which are quoted single-figure odds in early markets.

Meanwhile our sole NSW runner this week will be the Joe Pride-trained IMA CAPRI at Goulburn’s Friday meeting. The RUBICK gelding is aiming to break his maiden at career start number five.

Last week saw two of our Hoysted-trained 4yos shed their maiden status – WATERTIGHT at Ipswich (Read article) and SMUDGED at the Gold Coast (Read article).

Whilst we didn’t have any winners at Randwick’s feature meeting, PRIVATE EYE, FLYING BANDIT, IN FLIGHT and OTONO all ran well and remain on target to be racing back at Randwick on Saturday week.

Our form analyst Nic Ashman identified FLYING BANDIT as a horse to follow in his weekly SECTIONALS REVIEW article.

SIRE ON FIRE – SHAMUS AWARD

A visually stunning win by QUINTESSA in the Group 1 Proisir Plate (1400m) at Ellerslie on Saturday saw her become the fourth multiple Group 1 winner by SHAMUS AWARD. By this metric, he is on par with ZOUSTAR, WRITTEN TYCOON and only one short of SNITZEL. It’s worth noting SHAMUS AWARD has had significantly less foals than those stallions and his best-bred crop is still to come.

BLACK BOOKER – FLYING BANDIT

Resumed over a mile at Randwick last Saturday and clocked the fastest final 200m of the race, despite being in restricted in room, with stewards noting he went to the line untested. For a stayer first-up with 59.5kg on a drying deck, we couldn’t have asked for a better return from this galloper. You’ll likely see him next in the Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m) back at Randwick on Saturday September 20.

Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners

Goulburn Friday September 12

Maiden Handicap 1100m

IMA CAPRI

Joe Pride/Jay Ford

Comment: Just held his ground first-up at Wyong over 1000m where the leaders zipped home. Strips fitter for that and the extra 100m should suit. Drawn the outside of 10 but raced well at his only previous start here last preparation when beaten 0.6 lengths.

Doomben Saturday September 13

Class 6 Plate 1200m

TOWN CRIER

Matt Hoysted/Daniel Moor

Comment: Rider reported he felt the firm ground at Eagle Farm when finishing sixth of eight as a $3 chance last month. Heads back to Doomben where he won last campaign and drawn to get favours in the run. Capable of bouncing back.

BM78 Handicap 1630m

OCEAN ZAR

Matt Hoysted/Daniel Moor

Comment: Got within three-quarters of a length of the winner in a leader-dominated race over 1350m last start. Yet to win beyond 1400m and tackles a mile here but is racing more dour this preparation and won’t have to do any work early from a good draw.
