Proven Thoroughbreds and Joe Pride will launch a two-pronged attack on the Group 3 Nivison Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

Whilst it’s never ideal to have stablemates clashing in a feature race, the $250,000 event for mares is the only suitable contest on Saturday for IN FLIGHT and COSMONOVA (pictured). Both mares are in with a great chance so we would love to see them fighting out the finish in a perfect world!

IN FLIGHT is the $5 second favourite in early markets while COSMONOVA has been well supported from $26 into $14. It would be particularly fitting if COSMONOVA can win as her esteemed half-sister MAGIC TIME, who contests next Saturday’s Everest, won last year’s edition of the Nivison.

The Nivison was also a happy hunting ground for the late Guy Walter, who trained four winners for the race between 1998 and 2011 (RAZOR BLADE, SPINNING HILL, WHOEVER & BALMONT).

Meantime in Brisbane, our runners this week include three last start placegetters – SECOND SUN, ROCK THE SUNRISE and SMUDGED. The former two head to Eagle Farm on Saturday while the latter races at the Sunshine Coast’s Friday night meeting.

For a full break down of the performances of our runners last week, you can read form analyst Nic Ashman’s SECTIONALS REVIEW article.

SIRE ON FIRE – STAY INSIDE

Always a good sign when a stallion can get a winner with their first runner. Even better when it’s the Listed Breeders’ Plate (1000m). INCOGNITO showed a sharp turn of foot to take out the first 2yo race of the season and that no doubt has the shareholders of STAY INSIDE brimming with excitement. We currently have 20% left in a STAY INSIDE colt that recently finished an encouraging second in a jumpout at Eagle Farm last month (watch replay HERE).

BLACK BOOKER – CARPET RIDE

Forget she went around on debut. She got put out of play by severe interference over the 1000m Eagle Farm course. Her trial form was vindicated after stablemate SEISMIC BOOM easily won the following race. CARPET RIDE will come back a stronger horse next time in and won’t be a maiden for long.

Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners

Sunshine Coast Friday October 10

Maiden Handicap 1200m

TINTAURA

Matt Hoysted/Daniel Moor

Comment: Resumed in a fast run 1200m at Doomben last month and ran home respectably into fifth. Stays at 1200m but gets onto a bigger track and with natural improvement can figure in the money.

BM65 Handicap 1000m

TAKE A BOW

Matt Hoysted/Daniel Moor

Comment: Finished just behind the placegetters in midweek company over 1200m. Jumped on terms for a change so if she can begin well again then she is a big chance to atone coming back to provincial level.

BM62 Handicap 1400m

SMUDGED

Matt Hoysted/Damien Thornton

Comment: Sound win on debut then nabbed late over 1300m here when attempting to win from outside the lead. Gets blinkers on first time and should be prominent again.

Rosehill Saturday October 11

G3 Nivison Stakes 1200m

COSMONOVA

Joe Pride/Andrew Adkins

Comment: On the quick back-up after finishing within two lengths of the winner in BM94 grade at Randwick. Won over this course and distance when on a seven-day turnaround last year. She drew barrier one on that occasion and gets the inside gate again this time. Each-way.

IN FLIGHT

Joe Pride/Jay Ford

Comment: Class runner of the field suited by the set weights and penalties conditions. Won’t get her preferred rain-affected surface but easily has the best form of the race, having finished within two lengths of HEADWALL and LADY SHENANDOAH in the Concorde Stakes last month.

Eagle Farm Saturday October 11

BM70 Handicap 1600m

ROCK THE SUNRISE

Matt Hoysted/Damien Thornton

Comment: Up to his optimum distance now after going down narrowly over 1400m here on September 20 in Class 2 company. Drawn well and has the lightest weight in the field. Strong claims.

BM80 Handicap 1800m

SECOND SUN

Matt Hoysted/Damien Thornton

Comment: Ready to peak fourth-up. At latest outing finished within three-quarters of a length of the winner over this track and trip. Drops 4.5kg in weight and drawn to do no work from barrier one.
