A relatively quiet week for Proven Thoroughbreds with a quartet of runners, including a stakes winning juvenile looking to rediscover some form at Doomben’s midweek meeting.

PALAZZO SPIRIT was a winner of the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes (1000m) at his second start last season but has yet to hit his straps as a 3YO. Unplaced on resumption at Eagle Farm last month, the gelding comes back in grade on Wednesday but will need to overcome a wide barrier.

Meanwhile stablemate BETTER GET SET will be out to continue her winning form when she lines up in the 1200m Class 6 Plate at the Sunshine Coast’s Saturday metropolitan meeting. That race could precede a start in the Listed Just Now Stakes (1300m) for fillies and mares at Eagle Farm on December 10.

Our Joe Pride-trained runners this week comprise a pair of lightly-raced 3YOs in MOUNT WARNING and LITTLE COINTREAU, both of whom are coming off encouraging debut runs.

BLACK BOOKER

STROLL was a notable drifter in markets ahead of her return to racing at Doomben last Saturday but she was only beaten 0.7 lengths in the end. Considering she was underdone with bigger targets in mind, her effort to travel closer than midfield and still finish off strongly first-up over 1200m would suggest she’s in for a fruitful preparation. Her next start will be in the Listed Mode Plate (1200m) against her own sex under set weights conditions.

Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners

Doomben Wednesday Nov 16

BM68 Handicap 1050m:

PALAZZO SPIRIT

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Boris Thornton

Comment: Noted leader who found himself back in the field first-up in a strong race and was beaten 3.75 lengths by the promising CHINNY BOOM. Can certainly improve with a more positive ride, notwithstanding the wide barrier.

Hawkesbury Thursday Nov 17

Maiden Handicap 1300m:

LITTLE COINTREAU

Joe Pride/Regan Bayliss

Comment: Drew wide on debut and worked home fairly to finish 7th, beaten only two lengths. Will likely have to go back again from another awkward alley but extra distance suits and will have taken a good deal of benefit from the first-up run.

Sunshine Coast Saturday Nov 19

Class 6 Plate 1200m

BETTER GET SET

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Ben Thompson

Comment: Coming off a dominant win at Eagle Farm when taking a split between runners to win racing away over this distance. Looks to be hitting her straps now and has raced well here previously.

Gosford Saturday Nov 19

F&M Maiden Handicap 1200m

MOUNT WARNING

Joe Pride/Rory Hutchings

Comment: Got into an awkward spot at a crucial point of the race on debut and didn’t appear to fully stretch out. All the better for that experience where she was 4.5 lengths astern of the winner. Improver.
