The barrier gods have smote PRIVATE EYE once more, drawing barrier 14 in both the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield and the Group 2 Hunter (1300m) at Newcastle on Saturday.

After reviewing the respective fields on Wednesday morning, trainer Joe Pride opted for The Hunter where the rail will be in the true position, compared to 6m at Caulfield. PRIVATE EYE will have to lump 60kg in the $1 million feature but does bring the best formlines into the race, having run a gallant 6th in The Everest before finishing 5th in the Russell Balding Stakes which has produced a subsequent Group 1 winner in the shape of SUNSHINE IN PARIS.

PRIVATE EYE will be joined on the float to Newcastle by veteran stablemate STOCKMAN who contests the Listed Beauford (2300m) after a much improved effort in the Rosehill Gold Cup (2000m) where he finished within a length of the winner.

Our other runners on Saturday include the Matt Hoysted quartet of NAVAL TRADER, OCEAN ZAR, ZATANNA and SECOND SUN.

Meanwhile, 3yo filly INDEFENSIBLE is set to make her debut for Joe Pride at Canterbury’s first Friday night meeting of the season.

SIRE ON FIRE – ALABAMA EXPRESS

Got his first Group 1 winner courtesy of TREASURETHE MOMENT’s victory in the VRC Oaks (2500m) last week. We’ve been banging on for a while now about how this sire is doing things most don’t and to get a G1 winner in your first crop is very good sign.

BLACK BOOKER – BREAK FREE

She clocked 57.2 seconds for the 1000m, which is very slick for maiden grade. In fact, its around 7L faster than your average Maiden at the Sunshine Coast. She will progress nicely through the grades.

Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners

Doomben Wednesday November 13

Class 2 Handicap 1650m

CARTWHEELS

Matt Hoysted/Andrew Mallyon

Comment: Didn’t finish off when second-up at the mile last time but the fact she produced the best split of the race between the 400m and 200m says she’s come back well. Gets pet conditions here and strips fitter. Winning chance.

Canterbury Friday November 15

Maiden Handicap 1200m

INDEFENSIBLE

Joe Pride/Jay Ford

Comment: On debut and showed good improvement from first trial to second hit-out. Shapes as though she’ll improve again under race conditions. Each-way.

Ballina Friday November 15

Maiden Handicap 1010m

WATERTIGHT

Matt Hoysted/Andrew Mallyon

Comment: Ok on debut when settling on speed before condition gave out. Will strip fitter and drops back to an easier maiden. Winning chance.

Beaudesert Friday November 15

BM62 Handicap 1100m

BOARD MEMBER

Matt Hoysted/Fiona Sandkuhl (a1.5)

Comment: We were confident going into the last run and she didn’t let us down. This is a step up but well within her grasp given the rating she produced last start. Winning hope if she gets luck from the barrier.

Newcastle Saturday November 16

G2 The Hunter 1300m

PRIVATE EYE

Joe Pride/Jay Ford

Comment: Top shelf galloper probably a couple of lengths off his best form. However this is a significant drop in class and he brings the A-grade form. With the right run in transit (from another wide barrier), he can win this.

L The Beauford 2300m

STOCKMAN

Joe Pride/Reece Jones

Comment: Grand campaigner that showed good improvement last start at 2000m. Some rain would enhance his chances and on his best form he could easily win. Each-way.

Sunshine Coast Saturday November 16

Class 6 Plate 1400m

NAVAL TRADER

Matt Hoysted/Nikita Beriman

Comment: Not disgraced in Listed company last start where they ran fast time. Suited back to this grade and just needs a rolling tempo to show his best. Each-way.

BM68 Handicap 1800m

SECOND SUN

Matt Hoysted/Boris Thornton

Comment: Sectionals say he just peaked on his run last start when a gallant second. We’re expecting him to be close to peak fitness now and will appreciate the rise in distance.

Class 3 Plate 1400m

OCEAN ZAR

Matt Hoysted/Nikita Beriman

Comment: Beaten a pimple when heavily backed in what looked a harder race than this last start. Looks very well placed here. Winning chance.

QTIS 3yo Handicap 1000m

ZATANNA

Matt Hoysted/Nikita Beriman

Comment: Tried to lead all the way over 1100m last start and just overhauled late. We’ve given her 3 weeks between runs and dropped her back to 1000m. Should hopefully do the trick.
