Proven Thoroughbreds is set to have its first 2yo runner for the season this week.
SUMMER VIBE (pictured), a colt by BETTER THAN READY, is owned by an all-ladies syndicate and will have his first start at the Sunshine Coast’s Sunday meeting.
Trainer Matt Hoysted had SUMMER VIBE on the cusp of racing during the summer but decided to give the colt a chance to develop further and target the back end of the season.
Stablemate SEISMIC BOOM, a strong winner on debut in Brisbane last preparation, is also a potential runner this week though has drawn wide at Toowoomba’s Saturday evening fixture.
Nic Ashman’s latest SECTIONALS REVIEW article unpacks the maiden-breaking win of BROADWAY STREET as well as all other performers in the black and lime green over the past week.

SIRE ON FIRE – GRUNT
Went within a whisker of bagging a quartet of winners at Morphettville’s feature meeting last Saturday which included the Adelaide Guineas winner TIPTOP TORI. STRICTLY BUSINESS’s narrow defeat in the Group 1 SA Derby almost made it a gala for a stallion that currently stands for a very attractive fee of $16,500.
BLACK BOOKER – SOUTHERN GRACE
On debut over 1000m was never going to be her go but this Kerry Parker-trained filly acquitted herself very well under the guidance of Nash Rawiller, running the second fastest last 600m and fastest last 400m of the meeting. With natural improvement, she will be hard to beat over a touch further next start.
RUNNERS THIS WEEK
Warwick Thursday May 7
Maiden Handicap 1200m
MEASURE UP
Matt Hoysted/Jag Guthmann-Chester
Comment: Perhaps ridden too close to the speed on debut over 1000m when finishing two lengths astern of the winner at the Sunshine Coast. All the better for that experience and should appreciate the kinder tempo of 1200m, as well as the drop in grade.
Canberra Friday May 8
Maiden Handicap 1300m

OBSIDIAN DREAM
Joe Pride/Jean Van Overmeire
Comment: Looks ready to peak third-up following two creditable efforts in provincial company over 1100m and 1200m. Only has a handful of rivals to beat here and gives the impression 1300m will be to her liking.
Kembla Grange Saturday May 9
Midway Maiden Plate 1400m

WEEKDAY FLYER
Kerry Parker/Brock Ryan
Comment: Only got warm late on debut over 1300m here last month. The extra 100m might not be enough but can only improve from that outing and gets a senior rider aboard.
Gold Coast Saturday May 9
BM85 Handicap 1200m

TOWN CRIER
Matt Hoysted/Daniel Moor
Comment: Consistent gelding returning from a spell. Has won twice first-up previously but faces a task from a wide gate over 1200m.
Toowoomba Saturday May 9
QTIS 3YO BM60 Handicap 1100m

SEISMIC BOOM
Matt Hoysted/Fiona Sandkuhl (a)
Comment: First-up after winning impressively on debut at Eagle Farm over 1000m back in October. The dimensions of Toowoomba and the outside barrier makes this assignment tricky but well within her reach.
Sunshine Coast Sunday May 10
QTIS 3YO Maiden Handicap 1200m

PONTEVICO
Matt Hoysted/Boris Thornton
Comment: Returns to the Sunshine Coast for only his second career start after running on from the back to get within 1.5 lengths of the winner over 1000m. Six furlongs looks right up his alley but will need luck from a horrible draw.
QTIS 2YO Maiden Plate 1000m

SUMMER VIBE
Matt Hoysted/TBA
Comment: 2yo colt by BETTER THAN READY on debut. Has sound trial form and if he brings that to the races will be more than competitive in this.
