A trio of promising 3YO fillies will return to the races for Proven Thoroughbreds this week as the winter starts to set in.

HEYOKA will run at Ipswich on Wednesday off the back of a strong trial performance and worth noting she smashed the class benchmark for 1200m Maiden races at Doomben when on debut last preparation.

On Saturday, FORTUNEER (pictured) and THE BLACK CLOUD will run at Doomben and Randwick respectively. FORTUNEER remains undefeated in three starts and clearly has the respect of punters having not started greater than $3.90 in all runs to date. She goes to the Darby McCarthy over 1110m and has drawn perfectly in barrier 3.

THE BLACK CLOUD tasted defeat for the first time at her final run of her first preparation when beaten narrowly at Rosehill over 1100m. The speedy daughter of Cox Plate winner SHAMUS AWARD will resume in a BM78 at Randwick over 1000m and we like the fact she’s drawn away from the rail.

Speaking of speedy, 2YO filly ZATANNA is looking to become the first stakes winner by JUNGLE CAT when she tackles the Listed Bill Carter Stakes (1200m) at Doomben. It would be some feat for Telemon Stud, who bred ZATANNA and stayed in the filly while also standing JUNGLE CAT.

A special mention goes to our form analyst Nic Ashman whose paid tipping service steered subscribers into the Scone Cup winner SKY LAB at monster odds of $46 while also tipping Ortensia Stakes runner-up QUICK TEMPO each way at $34. Limited access to Nic’s tipping service The Beaten Favourite is available on the Proven website but if you are interested in subscribing to the full package you can CLICK HERE for a free trial.

Next week we will be selling six classy mares through Kenmore Lodge’s draft at the Magic Millions National Broodmare sale – STROLL, CANADIAN DANCER, RED RUBI, OCEAN TREATY, BETTER GET SET and FETCH. More to come on this in the week leading up to the sale.

SIRE ON FIRE – SNITZEL

The super sire bagged an interstate juvenile stakes double last Saturday with BITTERCREEK taking out the Spirit Of Boom at Doomben in fast time while LAZZURA made it two from two in the Listed Woodlands at Scone. It’s great timing as we are selling a SNITZEL juvenile stakes winner of our own in STROLL at the 2024 Magic Millions Broodmare sale next week.

BLACK BOOKER – IN FLIGHT

Devastating win first-up at Gosford last Thursday clocking the best last 800m and 600m of the day as well as smashing the class benchmark by more than four lengths. She can go on to better races off this.

BET WITH NIC

Our resident times analyst Nic Ashman is backing a form reversal from the Waterhouse/Bott-trained HOO YA MAL in Saturday’s Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m).

“He beat NUMERIAN home in the Hill Stakes last spring, which is a WFA race over 1900m on dry ground – very similar conditions to what we have here. Happy to take the $21 each-way.”

Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners

Ipswich Wednesday May 15

3YO BM65 Maiden Handicap 1200m

HEYOKA

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Boris Thornton

Comment: Finished ahead of our unbeaten filly FORTUNEER in a recent trial and won first-up last prep at Doomben clocking the 5th fastest last 1000m of the meeting. Has upside and should run well.

Warwick Farm Wednesday May 22

BM72 Handicap 1100m

ACCREDITED

Joe Pride/Rory Hutchings

Comment: Promising galloper that arrives here first-up with a trial win over Everest winner THINK ABOUT IT. His ratings last prep have him on top and we think he’s come back even better. Join the dots, he should be very hard to beat.

Gatton Friday May 24

Maiden Handicap 860m

LEVAR

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Emily Lang (a)

Comment: Out of top-class sprinting mare, SHAMAL WIND. Has taken his time to mature but his most recent public trial had plenty of merit when finishing a narrow 2nd in the fastest of 3 x 1000m Maiden heats of the morning.

Doomben Saturday May 25

Listed Darby McCarthy 1100m

FORTUNEER

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Tyler Schiller

Comment: Resumes. Given a quiet trial ahead of return but is unbeaten in three starts and ripped out the 3rd fastest last 200m of the day to win fresh last preparation. Talented and will take some beating from an ideal draw.

Listed Bill Carter Stakes 1200m

ZATANNA

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Blake Shinn

Comment: Smashed her opposition by 6.3L on debut at Ipswich. This much tougher but she clocked the best last 600m and 400m of the day and looks up to this grade albeit she is jumping sharply in trip.

Randwick Saturday May 25

BM78 Handicap 1000m

THE BLACK CLOUD

Joe Pride/Jay Ford

Comment: Resuming. Nicely placed down in the weights and comes out of a hot trial against better horses than these. Was able to sustain a hot speed when fresh last prep and should prove hard to run down albeit this race is loaded with pace.

Sunshine Coast Sunday May 26

BM70 Handicap 1400m

HANG FIVE

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/TBA

Comment: Good win two back on heavy ground here then not disgraced last start in a slowly run race. Will have plenty of bullets to fire here and drops back to easier company.

Maiden Handicap 1200m

ENLIGHTENING

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/TBA

Comment: On debut. They ran handy time in his most recent trial so the beaten margin might be a tad deceptive when assessing his chances here.
