Proven Thoroughbreds is set to have a trio of stakes runners this weekend, but will be without promising filly FETCH due to a high white blood cell count.
The Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted-trained FETCH was set to start one of the favourites in Saturday’s Listed Bill Carter Stakes (1200m) but has been scratched due to an irregular blood sample. The daughter of SEBRING will now head for a spell with a view to returning in the spring.
Fortunately, stablemate STELLAR MAGIC (pictured) will still take her place in the $150,000 2YO fillies event.
STELLAR MAGIC, who is yet to finish out of the top two in five career runs, will be out to avenge a luckless defeat for Proven in the same race last year.
The recently retired GOTTA KISS started a $2.25 favourite in the 2020 edition of the Bill Carter but was hopelessly blocked for a run in the straight, finishing third behind SEPTEMBER RUN, who incidentally went onto to win the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington in the spring.
Our other stakes runner at Doomben is free-running mare KYLEASE in the Listed Chief De Beers Handicap (1110m). The daughter of CHOISIR tackles the race four weeks after being beaten only a length in Listed grade at Eagle Farm.
Meanwhile in Sydney, STOCKMAN is a light weight chance in the Listed Lord Mayors Cup (2000m) at Rosehill and should be ready to peak fourth-up from a break.

BLACKBOOKER
GREENSPANran on strongly into sixth last Saturday at Kembla. He was more than six weeks between runs folowing a minor setback so to hit the line in the manner that he did was encouraging. He’s a horse that generally takes a few runs to hit his peak and is probably best suited in the 1400m-1600m distance range. He’s also had a change of stables, with Kerry Parker replacing the retiring John Bateman.
Comment: Game filly yet to finish out of the quinella in five runs to date. Already stakes placed and gets her chance to snare a valuable black type win.
Comment: Couldn’t quicken in the Gosford Cup last run – suspect he didn’t handle the tight turning track. Gets back to Rosehill where he has finished in the top three in all three of his starts. Probably needs the track to stay in the soft range.
Comment: Pulled up shin sore when finishing sixth here back in December. Started favourite that day off the back of some impressive trials. Has trialled well again this campaign so looking for her to bounce back.
