Stable star PRIVATE EYE runs in Saturday’s lone Group 1 in Australia, the Doomben 10000 (1200m) where he will be reunited with leading jockey Blake Shinn.
Shinn’s first ride on PRIVATE EYE resulted in a close second to IMPERATRIZ in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) first-up this campaign.
The Group 1-winning gelding has come through his All Aged Stakes placing in good order and will jump from barrier 6 in the Brisbane feature. Our times analyst, Nic Ashman, will provide an in depth preview of the Doomben 10000 later in the week.
Meanwhile, Everest winner THINK ABOUT IT will head to the trials next Tuesday ahead of his return in the Group 1 Kingsford Smith (1300m) at Eagle Farm on June 1.
Unbeaten filly FORTUNEER is set to resume in Saturday week’s Darby McCarthy Stakes (1110m) at Doomben. The daughter of speedster RUBICK is three from three and looked the goods in a recent trial at Deagon.
Also set to run at Doomben on Saturday week is stablemate ZATANNA – a brilliant winner on debut at Ipswich last Saturday. The daughter of JUNGLE CAT will be entered for the inaugural $1 million Magic Millions National 2YO Classic.
At the end of this month we will be selling six classy mares through Kenmore Lodge’s draft at the Magic Millions National Broodmare sale – STROLL, CANADIAN DANCER, RED RUBI, OCEAN TREATY, BETTER GET SET and FETCH. More to come on this in the week leading up to the sale.

SIRE ON FIRE – FASTNET ROCK
The legendary sire had CORNICHE race himself into Stradbroke Handicap calculations with a barnstorming win in the Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) while also being the broodmare sire of AMAZONIAN LASS, winner of the Gold Coast Bracelet. CORNICHE will head to the G3 Fred Best Classic on June 1 while AMAZONIAN LASS heads to the Doomben Roses on May 25 before a shot at the Queensland Oaks.
BLACK BOOKER – CARTWHEELS
Improved sharply second-up at her second run around the 1400m mark winning in good style at Eagle Farm last Wednesday. The daughter of TRAPEZE ARTIST clocked the 2nd fastest last 400m of the meeting and her slick 23.44 second close is more than 6L quicker than benchmark for the grade.
BET WITH NIC
Our resident times analyst Nic Ashman is backing Ciaron Maher to get a horse qualified for the Melbourne Cup this weekend.
“I blackbooked LIONEL after his Aussie debut at Mornington. He sat off a hot tempo and peaked on his run behind ARRAN BAY over 2000m. His overseas data suggests the extra trip will suit but he also possesses a decent turn of foot. I think he’ll win the Andrew Ramsden Stakes (2800m) at Flemington on Saturday and announce himself as a potential Cup horse.”
Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners
Ipswich Wednesday May 15
Maiden Handicap 1100m
BOARD MEMBER
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Justin Huxtable
Comment: Has trialled ok and should be an improver under race conditions. The barrier makes it tricky as they’ve got about 250m until they start turning.
Gosford Thursday May 16
BM64 Handicap 1100m
IN FLIGHT
Joe Pride/Reece Jones
Comment: Resumes off the back of two handy trials. Clocked the 4th best last 400m of the day when first-up at Wyong last prep despite travelling wide without cover. Rail expected to be off so wide gate may not be a disadvantage.
Doomben Saturday May 18
G1 Doomben 10,000 1200m
PRIVATE EYE
Joe Pride/Blake Shinn
Comment: Freshened since his gallant 3rd in the G1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) on April 20. Back to 1200m poses no problems and will appreciate what we think will be a drier surface. The last time he raced over 1200m he was beaten 0.8L in the Everest by THINK ABOUT IT. He’s right in this.
Listed Bright Shadow Stakes 1110m
RED RUBI
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Samantha Collett
Comment: Not disgraced in stakes grade last start where she clocked the 2nd best last 400m of the meeting. Should be good speed with a capacity field here and can figure if she gets within striking distance mid-race.
Kembla Grange Saturday May 18
Maiden Handicap 1200m
DONELEGANCE
Joe Pride/TBA
Comment: Makes her debut and has shown marked improvement from her first trial in January to the latest two where she has finished much closer. Will improve again but cannot rule out given she has a strong wet track pedigree.
