Talented gelding CONTEMPTUOUS will be shooting for his third win from five career starts when he steps out at Doomben on Wednesday.

The 4YO’s career has been interrupted by injury and illness but his ability has never waned, evidenced by a dominant first-up performance at the Sunshine Coast last month.

The Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted-trained galloper will need to keep improving if he is to win what is shaping as a competitive midweek event. Early markets currently have him priced around the $8 mark after opening at a high of $13.

CONTEMPTUOUS will be joined by stablemates SALTOREE and HE KNOWS at the meeting, while in Sydney, the John Bateman-trained LAMINGTON DRIVE chases three wins from his last four starts in the staying event at Warwick Farm.

On the sales front, the 2021 Inglis Premier Yearling auction concluded on Tuesday and Proven came away with two purchases, a VANCOUVER filly for the O’Dea-Hoysted stable and an ALL TOO HARD colt for Joe Pride. More information on our newest acquisitions will be posted in a sales wrap on Wednesday.

BLACKBOOKER

STELLAR MAGIC was an impressive trial winner at Doomben on Tuesday and looks set to return to the races in the next week or so. She started favourite in Brisbane’s first 2YO race of the season back in October and finished a desperately unlucky second. Very interested to see how she comes back as a late season 2YO.

Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners

Kembla Tuesday March 2

Maiden Plate 1200m

TORINDA

Joe Pride/Brenton Avdulla

Comment: Green but sound effort on debut when third at Goulburn. Sure to take benefit from that experience and should appreciate stepping up in distance from a soft draw.

Doomben Wednesday March 3

Maiden Handicap 1110m:

SALTOREE

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Stephanie Thornton

Comment: Honest filly who’s had to settle for runner-up honours in two runs to date. Expecting her to be in the finish again, just needs some luck from a wide barrier.

Class 3 Handicap 1050m:

CONTEMPTUOUS

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Ben Thompson

Comment: Kept fresh since bolting in first-up at the Sunshine Coast over 1000m. Always shown above average ability but a string of set backs have limited him to only four starts as a summer four-year-old. Looked good winning a Deagon trial on February 23.

3YO Class 1 Plate 1200m:

HE KNOWS

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Ben Thompson

Comment: Couldn’t make an impression on firm Eagle Farm track last start but had strong form prior to that, finishing second to BATANGA’S ENTRY and winning in midweek company. Look for him to bounce back with a bit of give in the ground.

Warwick Farm Wednesday March 3

BM72 Handicap 2200m:

LAMINGTON DRIVE

John Bateman/Kerrin McEvoy

Comment: Got going when it was all over last time out, probably owing to him coming back in trip from 2000m to 1800m. Gets a suitable distance rise here but will need luck from a wide barrier.

Canberra Monday March 8

Class 2 Handicap 1200m:

BOMBARDEO

John Bateman/TBA

Comment: Pulled up lame from a disappointing sixth here on February 19 when favourite. The horse has since recovered well and can win based on previous form.
