Everest winner THINK ABOUT IT is off to the spelling paddock after a below par performance in last Saturday’s Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup.
The gelding was heavily backed into favouritism but laboured to the line to finish 5th beaten 3.3L by I WISH I WIN. Clearly, his previous form is better than that so we’ve decided it is in the best interests of the horse that he has a decent spell now with an eye to the spring. It’s certainly been a busy 18 months for THINK ABOUT IT which saw him win 9 on the bounce, taking in The Everest, two Group 1s, a Group 2, Group 3 and Listed event.
The son of SO YOU THINK joins high profile stablemate PRIVATE EYE in the spelling paddock at Kolora Lodge in Queensland.
Speaking of PRIVATE EYE, his half-brother KING’S SECRET (pictured) will trial at Warwick Farm on Friday – keep an eye out for him as we believe he is above average off what we’ve seen so far.
Still on the trials at the Farm and our first ever tried horse purchase with Joe Pride will be on display. Plucked from New Zealand comes ELLE HUDSON, who recorded slick time winning a trial in his homeland and running 4th on debut over 1200m before we picked him up. He’s a three-year-old by TARZINO and we looking forward to seeing how he performs in his first Australian trial.
It was a milestone Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale for Proven Thoroughbreds last week with six mares realising an aggregate sale price of $1.635 million. More on that HERE…

SIRE ON FIRE – ALMANZOR
Figuring prominently in staying classics this season he once again found himself in the frame of a 3YO stamina test with MOONLIGHT MAGIC finishing second in the Queensland Derby at Eagle Farm. Earlier in the day three-year-old colt GERIATRIX took out a 1400m contest showing the versatility of this sire.
BLACK BOOKER – LITTLE COINTREAU
Resumed at Canterbury last Wednesday and we expected him to improve a lot with this run. But he showed his class by recording the 2nd fastest last 1000m of the meeting and beating the class benchmark off a slow tempo. Expecting him to be competitive in harder races this campaign.
BET WITH NIC
Our resident times analyst Nic Ashman says there’s one horse all eyes should be on in Saturday’s Queensland Oaks at Eagle Farm.
“The action of SCARLET OAK is so nippy that if she can stretch it out to these staying trips, we could be looking at a G1 WFA horse in the next six to 12 months. She’s got to prove it yet but the early signs are there.”
Nic will be providing a full preview of the Oaks later this week.
Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners
Warwick Farm Wednesday Jun 5
BM64 Handicap 1100m
COSMONOVA
Joe Pride/Reece Jones
Comment: Winner of 2 from 3 and both those wins were on soft ground. First-up last campaign sat on a hot speed before smashing the class benchmark at Gosford by more than 6 lengths.
Doomben Wednesday Jun 5
Maiden Plate 1350m
MOONFLEET
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Emily Lang
Comment: Coming out of two fast run races and produced the 3rd fastest last 1000m of the day last start so we have little issue with her going up in trip off a month between runs.
Randwick Saturday June 8
BM78 Handicap 1000m
THE BLACK CLOUD
Joe Pride/Jay Ford
Comment: Terrific return beating the BM78 class benchmark by 5L when resuming over this track and distance last start. Recorded the best last 800m and 600m of the day there and should be very hard to beat again.
Eagle Farm Saturday June 8
Listed Queensland Day Stakes 1200m
FORTUNEER
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Michael Dee
Comment: Beaten for the first time when resuming at Doomben but we were buoyed by the fact she still ran the 2nd fastest last 400m of the day. Gets her chance to atone here and show that she’s up to this class.
Kembla Grange Saturday June 8
Class 1 Handicap 1200m/F&M BM64 Handicap 1400m
SLIPSTREAMING
Kerry Parker/TBA
Comment: Resuming for new stable. Stayer that will improve as the distances rise but watch for her late as she reeled off the 7th fastest last 200m of the day when first-up last prep.
Gold Coast Saturday June 8
Maiden Handicap 1200m
ENLIGHTENING
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted
Comment: On debut. They ran handy time in his most recent trial so the beaten margin might be a tad deceptive when assessing his chances here.
Canterbury Monday June 10
BM72 Handicap 1250m
ACCREDITED
Joe Pride/TBA
Comment: He was our blackbooker last week after being sandwiched between two horses when racing on speed first-up at Warwick Farm. Had a good blow afterwards and we expect him to be hard to beat here.
