The Queensland winter carnival moves to Ipswich this Saturday for their annual Cup meeting where Proven Thoroughbreds has three horses nominated.
The Matt Hoysted-trained trio of SHOT OF WHISKEY (pictured), NAVAL TRADER and SEISMIC BOOM are set to face the starter on Saturday, the former of which is a last start Doomben winner.
But before the team heads to Ipswich, Hoysted will take the covers off 2yo trial winner APEX PREDATOR at Doomben’s midweek fixture. Bookmakers have installed the daughter of first season sire TIGER OF MALAY as the early favourite in the 1200m QTIS Maiden.
Also running on Wednesday will be NZ import ELLE HUDSON and 3yo gelding HARD LINER for Joe Pride at Canterbury. ELLE HUDSON looks poised to win third-up over 1900m while HARD LINER is only stepping out for his second career outing and will benefit from the experience.

SIRE ON FIRE – TORONADO
Most sires go their whole career without a juvenile Group 1 winner – indeed it took I AM INVINCIBLE more than 10 years – so it was curious to see a son of HIGH CHAPARRAL sire last Saturday’s G1 JJ Atkins winner TRON BOLT. If there were any doubts about TORONADO being a proper stallion, they have surely been put to bed now. He has stakes winners from 1000m all the way up to 2800m and remains great value at $88,000.

Nic Ashman’s Sectionals Review article best summarises OPINE’s debut at Gosford last week: “Nothing went right – he was dragged back and then over-raced, constantly getting his head up. Finally he was let go at the 400m and from there to the 200m he clocked the fastest sectional in the race. But the poor manners told late and his run petered out. He might be better off being allowed to use his energy or perhaps his manners will improve – likely one of those two, and either way he improves.”
