Rain has wreaked havoc again along Australia’s eastern seaboard, forcing evacuations and mass scheduling changes of upcoming races and trials.
For the second time this year, rising have floodwaters in the Hawkesbury region have forced the relocation of some of our horses. At this stage, our horses stationed on the central coast and south western slopes are safe.
Warwick Farm was on high alert during the peak of the rainfall but thankfully Joe Pride’s stables and horses emerged unscathed.
Though not as bad as Sydney’s deluge, Brisbane has also been lashed by rain, with Saturday’s Doomben meeting expected to be in the heavy track range.
A large contingent of Proven gallopers were also set to trial this week but the wet weather had other ideas. Interrupted programming due to the elements is unfortunately an inevitability in racing but 2022 will surely go down as one of the worst on record.
One horse that will relish the conditions at Randwick on Saturday is SNIPPY FOX (pictured), a three-time winner on heavy ground. The Pride-trained mare will be looking to add her seventh win at career start number 20 in the 1200m BM88 Handicap.
SNIPPY FOX’s stablemate RUBINOCCHI will also be running at Randwick on Saturday. Though not as prolific on heavy tracks, the daughter of RUBICK is in fine form this campaign, having won twice in four starts.
Our stakes runner this weekend is the O’Dea-Hoysted-trained CONTEMPTUOUS, who tackles the Listed Chief De Beers (1110m) at Doomben from an awkward barrier.

BLACK BOOKER
THATFEELSBETTER showed plenty of grit to hold down third on a bottomless Sunshine Coast track last Saturday. Caught on the inferior inside section of the home straight, the son of BETTER THAN READY chased resolutely to be beaten less than two lengths. That was his first run in two months so would expect him to improve sharply next time out, preferably over 1200m.
Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners
Doomben Saturday July 9
QTIS 3YO Fillies Handicap 1350m:
KARAOKE QUEEN
Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/Jaden Lloyd (a1.5)
Comment: Up in class following a solid third in midweek company. Should appreciate going up to this distance and drawn favourably. Unknown on anything worse than a soft (5).
Listed Chief De Beers 1110m:
CONTEMPTUOUS
Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/Jaden Lloyd (a1.5)
Comment: Ultra consistent gelding. Will need luck from a wide gate but excels at Doomben and has the class to win. Would prefer to see the track get back into the soft range.
BM85 Handicap 1350m:
OCEAN TREATY
Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/Jaden Lloyd (a1.5)
Comment: Classy mare resuming. Generally takes a run to hit her peak and will be better over further. Look for her to be running on late.
Randwick Saturday July 9
BM78 Handicap 1100m:
RUBINOCCHI
Joe Pride/Sam Clipperton
Comment: In-form filly with speed to burn. Can utilise the inside draw to her advantage and will be hard to run down again.
BM88 Handicap 1200m:
SNIPPY FOX
Joe Pride/Jay Ford
Comment: Picked up late to just miss a place in the June Stakes first-up. Is a three-time winner second-up, will appreciate rising to 1200m and loves the heavy going. Strong claims.
Beaudesert Saturday July 9
QTIS 3YO BM58 Handicap 1400m
COME CLEAN
Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/TBA
Comment: Coming off a fast-finishing third here over 1100m a fortnight back. Will appreciate rising to 1400m and looks well placed.
Sunshine Coast Sunday July 10
QTIS 2YO Handicap 1100m
UNDERHAND
Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/TBA
Comment: On debut. Trials have indicated a good level of ability. Synthetic track is an unknown.
