Five horses will face the starter for Proven Thoroughbreds this week, including veteran sprinter SCALLOPINI.

Though unplaced in two runs this campaign, SCALLOPINI (pictured) will appreciate the three week break into Saturday’s 1400m Open Handicap at Eagle Farm.

In what is hopefully a good omen, SCALLOPINI’s younger half-sister RED RUBI returned a dominant winner at the Sunshine Coast only last Sunday.

The Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted stable will also be represented by RICH LISTER on Saturday. The daughter of RICH ENUFF is set to contest the QTIS 3YO Fillies Handicap where first place prizemoney is a healthy $79,450.

Meanwhile in Sydney, the Joe Pride-trained INVINCIANO gets her chance to return to the winners circle at the Kensington midweek meeting.

BLACKBOOKER

HE KNOWS looked disappointing on paper last week but there were a few mitigating factors. He’d never previously raced below 1100m and was caught wide facing the breeze throughout. Being first-up he was always going to take a good deal of improvement out of the race, and the dawdling early pace didn’t suit his racing pattern either. He’s worth following when he gets to 1200m, particularly if there is early speed on.

Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners

Randwick-Kensington Wednesday July 28

BM72 Handicap 1550m:

INVINCIANO

Joe Pride/Brenton Avdulla

Comment: Game in defeat last time when made to do a fair bit of work early. Drawn wide again here but appreciates galloping room and jumping from 1300m to 1550m is right up her alley.

Goulburn Friday July 30

3YO Maiden Plate 1600m:

BHUTAN

Kerry Parker/TBA

Comment: Making steady improvement this preparation. Finished within five lengths of the winner last start over 1400m and looks ready for the mile now. Needs to lift to be considered a winning hope but did run well here on debut in January.

Class 2 Handicap 1500m:

HIGH TRIBUTE

Joe Pride/TBA

Comment: Began well but didn’t see out the 2000m last time. Coming back in trip looks suitable and may rediscover winning form if she can lead.

Eagle Farm Saturday July 31

Open Handicap 1400m:

SCALLOPINI

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/TBA

Comment: Found himself in the unfamiliar position of leading in the Glasshouse Handicap and stuck on well to finish 2.5 lengths in arrears of the winner. Three weeks between runs suits and will appreciate coming back to open company.

3YO Fillies Handicap 1300m:

RICH LISTER

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/TBA

Comment: Finished fourth of eight at Ipswich as favourite last start but was almost two months between runs following a minor set back. Should be getting back to near peak fitness now and is talented on her day.

Kembla Grange Sunday August 1

Maiden Handicap 1500m:

BHUTAN

Kerry Parker/TBA

Comment: Making steady improvement this preparation. Finished within five lengths of the winner last start over 1400m and racing as though she is looking for further. Needs to find something extra however.
