After a brief hiatus, The Week Ahead is back as we count down to the end of a stellar 2023-24 season.

A phenomenal eight winners in the space of eight days lifted our number of winners for the season to 60 and 40 for the calendar year.

Unfortunately, wide barriers will see flying filly TERMAGANT scratched at both Randwick or Doomben on Saturday however we are going to roll the dice with last start winner LITTLE COINTREAU who has also drawn awkwardly at Randwick where the rail will be out up to 12 metres.

Our only other Saturday representative will be TOWN CRIER (pictured). Another in form galloper having won his last two, the son of SPIRIT OF BOOM is down to contest the 1200m 3YO Handicap at Doomben.

Other runners of note this week include COSMONOVA at Canterbury’s midweek meeting and NZ import ELLE HUDSON at Wyong on Thursday.

SIRE ON FIRE – WRITTEN TYCOON

We know what a great season he’s had and he was prominent again last Saturday, siring the 3rd placegetter SUPERLICIOUS in the SA Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) and Singapore Derby (1800m) runner-up MAKIN.

BLACK BOOKER – TOWN CRIER

Big win during the Grafton carnival smashing the class benchmark for Class 2 1100m races by more than 6L. His ratings suggest he’s on an upward spiral and can win against better.

BET WITH NIC

Our resident times analyst Nic Ashman has done the Olympic form and highlights the good things in the pool and putting them into a multi for a spring future

“The $1.40 on offer for ARIARNE TITMUS in the 400m freestyle is overs. She should be $1.25 given her qualifying times. SUMMER MCINTOSH  is the Canadian star and will win the women’s 400m Individual Medley while TITMUS’s rival KATIE LEDECKY will probably have the Aussie’s measure over 800m but it’s the best of good thing’s in the women’s 1500m. Take those 3 Swimming legs into VIA SISTINA to win the G1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) on October 5. Connections of PRIDE OF JENNI have stated she will target the King Charles over 1600m so its hard to imagine she will run over 2000m first. The multi for her and the swimmers is paying around $7 – good bet!”

Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners

Canterbury Wednesday July 24

BM64 Handicap 1100m

COSMONOVA

Joe Pride/Reece Jones

Comment: Maps beautifully to get a trail behind the favourite and her ratings are just as good. Hard to beat and price looks appealing.

Wyong Thursday July 25

Super Maiden Plate 1300m

ELLE HUDSON

Joe Pride/Regan Bayliss

Comment: Early Trackwalker info saying the inside 2 lanes will be inferior so the wide gate from a fair start might be ok. Nice trial win and looks a big improver. The $9 looks generous.

BM68 Handicap 1350m

LICHESTER

Kerry Parker/Andrew Adkins

Comment: Has the ability but can put in a stinker. Coming off a horrible run but the last time she flopped like that she came out and won next start.

Randwick Saturday July 27

BM78 Handicap 1300m

LITTLE COINTREAU

Joe Pride/Jay Ford

Comment: Has missed a place just once in 12 starts and is coming off a win at the Kensington track where he clocked the 4th fastest last 1200m of the day. Bad draw though here and he’ll need a peach to win again albeit the ability is there.

Doomben Saturday July 27

3YO Open Handicap 1200m

TOWN CRIER

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Boris Thornton

Comment: Is our blackbooker from last week because of the fast time he posted. Tougher field here, drops in weight but draws poorly. With luck can win again.

Bathurst Tuesday July 30

BM66 Handicap 1800m

SLIPSTREAMING

Kerry Parker/TBA

Comment: Returned to form when outstaying her rivals over 2000m in Class 1 company. Looks well placed here but coming back slightly in trip is some query.
