Day One of the Magic Millions carnival will see a Proven Thoroughbreds runner chase the lion’s share of $250,000 in the Maiden Plate.
HIT THE SWITCH, a 3yo son of FARNAN, has secured a run in the rich maiden and will have the services of top class jockey Damian Lane. The Matt Hoysted-trained gelding has finished in the top four at all five of his career starts and is racing as though he is looking for Saturday’s trip of 1400m.
The Hoysted stable, which has produced four winners from its last five runners, will send out some other up-and-coming gallopers this week, namely LARADO and HEAD OF THE RIVER at the Sunshine Coast’s Friday night meeting.
Meanwhile, Wyong plays host to Saturday racing where Joe Pride saddles up a pair of chestnut ALL TOO HARD progeny in ACCREDITED and INDEFENSIBLE.
Moving further south, LITTLE COINTREAU will get his first look of Flemington when he steps out for our Victorian trainer Charlotte Littlefield.
Last week we rung in the new year with a winning double, courtesy of KING’S SECRET in the Listed Canterbury Sprint (1200m) and BREAK FREE at the Sunshine Coast. More on that HERE.

SIRE ON FIRE – ALMANZOR
We made him last week’s Sire On Fire and can’t see any reason to change that after his son FIRST FIVE won the Group 1 Telegraph in NZ…over 1200m! To put that into context, ALMANZOR’s three other Group 1 winners have won up to 3200m, 2500m and 2200m. His other results over the weekend included Group 2 placegetter (ARGO).
BLACK BOOKER – RULE THE NIGHT
This unraced colt by WILD RULER has been one of our more advanced 2yos this season, progressing to an Eagle Farm barrier trial on Tuesday in which he finished third. Could be a prospect for the winter.
Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners
Eagle Farm Wednesday January 7
Class 1 Handicap 1200m
MELTDOWN
Matt Hoysted/Jag Guthmann-Chester
Comment: Hasn’t quite delivered on the early promise he showed so this shapes as a critical campaign. Won a Deagon trial in preparation for this first-up assignment. Whilst this distance is short of his best, he has the benefit of barrier one.
Sunshine Coast Friday January 9
Class 1 Handicap 1000m

LARADO
Matt Hoysted/Daniel Moor
Comment: Looked like one right out of the box when a dominant winner on debut but was subsequently beaten as a long odds-on favourite before being spelled. Trialled up well for this and gets a chance to right that wrong.
QTIS 3yo Maiden Handicap 1000m

HEAD OF THE RIVER
Matt Hoysted/Daniel Moor
Comment: Travelled to Coffs Harbour for her first and only start and dropped out after riding a hot speed. Trials suggest she’s much better than that and as a more mature filly this time in, she can bounce back hard here.
Gold Coast Saturday January 10
Magic Millions Maiden Plate 1400m

HIT THE SWITCH
Matt Hoysted/Damian Lane
Comment: Caught wide without cover but kept coming in the straight to grab fourth over 1200m at the Sunshine Coast last start. On that evidence, 1400m at the Gold Coast should pose no problems and on the whole, his form has been very consistent without winning. Wide barrier the main issue.
Wyong Saturday January 10
BM100 Handicap 1350m

ACCREDITED
Joe Pride/Adam Hyeronimus
Comment: Found the Eagle Farm surface too firm when fourth in the Group 3 Lough Neagh Stakes. Back to benchmark company now and is the clear class runner in this field.
BM78 Handicap 1100m

INDEFENSIBLE
Joe Pride/Andrew Adkins
Comment: Impressive winner over the 1000m at Warwick Farm two starts back but couldn’t back it up at Randwick when seemingly run off her feet and chasing for a long way. Back up to 1100m now should aid her cause but needs to find some consistency in her form.
Flemington Saturday January 10
BM74 Handicap 1400m

LITTLE COINTREAU
Charlotte Littlefield/Harry Coffey
Comment: Disappointed first-up at Caulfield but did pull up with some minor breathing and muscular issues. Form from last preparation is mostly around stakes class horses so is well placed in BM74 company.
