This week has been overshadowed by Racing NSW’s unilateral decision to abandon Saturday’s Listed Carrington Stakes (1400m) in which Proven Thoroughbreds had the early odds-on favourite in ACCREDITED.
A lack of acceptors was the only explanation given by Racing NSW when late on Wednesday morning the industry body decided to cancel the Carrington Stakes which has left trainer Joe Pride scrambling for alternatives.
It is particularly disappointing as ACCREDITED had been kept in training for the past three weeks on the basis he would be able to contest the $200,000 event.
Meanwhile, the Pride and Proven combination is still represented by last start winner ELLE HUDSON (pictured) at Randwick’s Kensington midweek meeting as well as COSMONOVA on the quick back-up at Randwick on Saturday.
In Queensland, we have lightly-raced mares TERMAGANT and OCEAN ZAR lining up for the Matt Hoysted stable. Both horses are knocking on the door and strike winnable races.
Our team of runners is rounded out by 3yo gelding ROCK THE SUNRISE, who is out to break his maiden in a $50,000 contest at Grafton on Monday.

SIRE ON FIRE – WOOTTON BASSETT
Produced the highly impressive 2yo debutant WODETON last Saturday, less than 24 hours after his son GALLO NERO was a closing third in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic. With PALLATON currently on the second line of betting for the Golden Slipper, WOOTTON BASSETT has a very strong hand at this early stage for the world’s richest 2yo race.
BLACK BOOKER – ALDEZOR
Lots to like about the debut of this NZ-bred 3yo. Went straight to a Sydney midweek maiden and acquitted himself very well against more experienced opposition. Despite travelling keen for the first half of the race, he still ran on with plenty of gusto to finish just behind the placegetters. For an ALMANZOR to do that in an 1150m contest, certainly bodes well for his future. He has gone for a spell now and will be back in the winter.

Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners
Randwick-Kensington Wednesday January 22
BM72 Handicap 1800m
ELLE HUDSON
Joe Pride/Alysha Collett
Comment: Dominant winner over 1900m at Newcastle last time out. Still looks on the up. Only queries are he’s coming back slightly in trip and is racing on the Kensington circuit for the first time.
Sunshine Coast Saturday January 25
BM80 Handicap 1000m
TERMAGANT
Matt Hoysted/TBA
Comment: Loomed up to win fresh but threw the race away by wanting change legs and shifting ground. Obviously very talented but still needs to iron out her racing manners.
Randwick Saturday January 25
F&M BM78 Handicap 1200m
COSMONOVA
Joe Pride/Reece Jones
Comment: Just floundered on a deteriorating surface at Rosehill last Saturday. Will get a much better track here and Pride-trained horses usually relish a quick turn-around.
Ipswich Sunday January 26
F&M BM58 Handicap 1200m
CHATTERBOX
Matt Hoysted/TBA
Comment: Weakened noticeably last start but got very hot and bothered pre-race so is obviously better than that, as indicated by her win the start prior. Can bounce back but needs to.
Doomben Monday January 27
Class 4 Handicap 1350m
OCEAN ZAR
Matt Hoysted/TBA
Comment: Hasn’t had a lot go right this preparation, mostly due to wide barriers and getting too far back in her races so the draw here is critical.
Grafton Monday January 27
Super Maiden Handicap 1400m
ROCK THE SUNRISE
Matt Hoysted/TBA
Comment: Got mobile late over 1200m at Eagle Farm first-up. Sure to appreciate the extra 200m here and the drop in class. Look for sharp improvement, particularly if he can settle closer to the speed.
