A washed out Magic Millions meeting was the last thing on our mind last week but co-trainers Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted are confident Thursday’s rescheduled program won’t hinder Proven Thoroughbreds’ trio of runners.
An unexpected downpour was enough for officials to postpone the Gold Coast’s feature meeting after just two races on Saturday.
STROLL (pictured), SCALLOPINI and CONTEMPTUOUS had all arrived on course, only to be put back on the float to head back to Brisbane. All three were granted access to the Eagle Farm course proper on Monday morning to keep their fitness levels in check ahead of Magic Millions ‘Take 2′.
As of Wednesday afternoon the Gold Coast track was still rated in the heavy range however hot conditions are predicted for Thursday is expected to bring the track back to a soft reading which will aid each of our runners’ chances.
Elsewhere, the Joe Pride-trained SNIPPY FOX continues her quest for a black type win in Saturday’s Listed Carrington Stakes at Randwick while stablemate CREWMAN, a 3YO gelding by MERCHANT NAVY, is set to debut at Kembla Grange on Saturday.
Another runner of note this week is ZOOCUPOLA, who showed great fight to win at his first start earlier this month. The son of ZOUSTAR has been entered for two races at the Sunshine Coast’s Sunday fixture.

BLACK BOOKER
Unraced 3YO filly POLARISING turned heads at the Doomben trials on Tuesday with a 5.5 length trouncing of her rivals over 1000m. Yes it was only a trial, but the early signs are positive with this girl and you would think she is going to be hard to beat wherever the O’Dea-Hoysted camp decide to run her.
Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners
Gold Coast Thursday Jan 19
Magic Millions 3YO Guineas 1425m:
STROLL
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Craig Williams
Comment: No luck last time when lost all momentum at a crucial stage. Drawn to effect and will have no problems at the trip.
Magic Millions The Syndicate 1200m:
CONTEMPTUOUS
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Craig Williams
Comment: Consistent sprinter who has steadily climbed through the grades. Acquitted himself well in stakes company last start, finishing a game second to GARIBALDI. Can figure with luck in running.
SCALLOPINI
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Craig Williams
Comment: Beautifully placed under the weight for age conditions and always pulls out a run fresh. Drawn well and beat SPIRITUALISED in a recent trial.
Randwick Saturday Jan 21
Listed Carrington Stakes 1400m:
SNIPPY FOX
Joe Pride/Jay Ford
Comment: Caught wide second-up over 1200m and stuck on ok to finish 5th. Drawn more favourably this time and will appreciate getting out to 1400m, but will only run if the track is at least soft.
Doomben Saturday Jan 21
3YO C&G BM72 Handicap 1200m:
HANG FIVE
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Jaden Lloyd
Comment: Lightly-raced gelding resuming from a spell. Brings strong formlines from last preparation into this and is yet to run a bad race.
Class 6 Plate 1350m:
OCEAN TREATY
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Ben Thompson
Comment: Drawn wide but always seems to pull out a run fresh. Should have won first-up over this track and trip last campaign.
Kembla Grange Saturday Jan 21
Maiden Handicap 1200m:
CREWMAN
Joe Pride/Jeff Penza
Comment: Debutant who showed improvement from his first trial into his second trial. Will likely need every bit of the 1200m here. Prefer to wait until he gets up to a mile.
Maiden Plate 1000m:
CHILLI JAM
Joe Pride/Mitchell Bell
Comment: Appeared to have every chance last start and was meek at the finish. Form prior was good without winning. Back to 1000m could help her find that killer instinct.
Sunshine Coast Sunday Jan 22
BM58 Handicap 1000m:
ZOOCUPOLA
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Ben Thompson
Comment: Showed a great will to win on debut here – staving off a wall of runners – and no reason to say he can’t put in a repeat performance.
