The Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale has concluded for another year but the racing schedule marches on with Proven set to be represented by seven runners this week.

Proven left the Gold Coast with 10 yearlings, eight of which will be trained by our Queensland team of Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted, while the other two are bound for the Joe Pride stable in Sydney. Details of our purchases, including videos, photos, sales notes and key factors will be available online from Thursday.

The 2024 Magic Millions race meeting was bitter sweet for us as our beloved mare BETTER GET SET finished a brave 2nd in the $1 million QTIS Open (1300m) after looking like the winner at the 200m mark. Narrow defeats are never easy to digest but we could not have been prouder of the 6YO as she took her total earnings past $650,000 for her big group of owners.

The Proven colours did manage to salute elsewhere on Saturday as LICHESTER won her first start for Kerry Parker at Kembla Grange.

Our runners this week include a pair of promising fillies aiming to keep their unblemished records intact. THE BLACK CLOUD (pictured) will be out to follow up an impressive debut victory at Randwick on Wednesday before FORTUNEER shoots for a hat-trick at Eagle Farm’s Saturday meeting.

BLACK BOOKER

TERMAGANT was a beaten favourite on debut at Ipswich but lost no admirers in defeat. She simply got too far out of her ground over the short 800m course but flew late to grab second, a neck from the winner. On a bigger track over a bit further next time, she will be hard to beat.

Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners

Randwick-Kensington Wednesday January 17

BM64 Handicap 1100m

THE BLACK CLOUD

Joe Pride/Jay Ford

Comment: Super debut win at Gosford, getting close to track record time. Unknown in the wet but bred to handle it and drawn to be in what will likely be the best part of the track come the time of her race.

Doomben Wednesday January 17

Class 1 Handicap 1200m

OCEAN ZAR

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Ben Thompson

Comment: Resuming. Has finished in the quinella at four of her five starts and strikes a winnable race here. Top chance.

BM65 Handicap 1350m

DEEP CLEAN

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Ben Thompson

Comment: Jumped away better from the barriers last time but was posted three deep throughout. Showed great tenacity to finish within 1.5 lengths of the winner after a tough run.

Wyong Thursday January 18

BM64 Handicap 1100m

COSMONOVA

Joe Pride/Reece Jones

Comment: Talented filly shooting for back to back wins. Given a tick over trial at Warwick Farm last week and is proven in soft ground.

Sunshine Coast Friday January 19

Maiden Handicap 1000m

RUBINOVA

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/TBA

Comment: On debut. Won his first trial of the campaign and then no guide latest when used up early. 1000m on a spacious track looks an ideal starting point.

Eagle Farm Saturday January 20

QTIS 3YO Handicap 1300m

FORTUNEER

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/TBA

Comment: Yet to put a foot wrong in her two starts to date, winning impressively on both occasions. Up in grade again but looks promising.

Gatton Monday January 22

QTIS 3YO Maiden Handicap 860m

JET STREAM

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/TBA

Comment: Bungled the start on debut over 800m at Ipswich but looked good late, running on into fourth. Jumped away much better in a trial on Tuesday morning so can figure if she replicates that back at the races.
