And so another season begins in the racing world and as usual there is no rest for the wicked!

The 2022-23 season will live long in our memory with multiple Group 1 wins, a Melbourne Cup runner and more than $10 million in prizemoney the highlights. You can read a full review of Proven’s 2022-23 season HERE.

Such is the nature of racing, we often find ourselves looking forward rather than taking time to reflect.

The new season will be ushered in with five runners for Proven across the Randwick-Kensington and Doomben midweek fixtures. Then on Saturday our sole runner will be the well performed mare BETTER GET SET (pictured) at Eagle Farm. Last start winner CREWMAN and debutante CHAIRLIFT round out a busy opening week of the season.

On the trial front, things are starting to heat up from a spring carnival perspective and you can expect to see one of our headline horses in PRIVATE EYE back at the trials later this month.

BLACK BOOKER

At the Doomben trials on Tuesday we got a first look at TERMAGANT, a daughter of Proven Thoroughbreds’ stakes winning filly CANDIKA. Now a 3YO, TERMAGANT struck a hot trial for her first public hit-out and crossed the line with the much more experienced MISS COOTA. Not sure if we will get to see TERMAGANT at the races this time in but the early signs are encouraging.

Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners

Doomben Wednesday August 2

Maiden Plate 1200m

EVERCLEAR

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Boris Thornton

Comment: No guide on debut when caught wide around Ipswich and yielded ground in the run home. Faces a sticky draw again here but with some speed on he can hopefully slot in towards the tail of the field and be ridden to do his best work late.

BM65 Handicap 1660m

TERANGA

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Jaden Lloyd

Comment: Finished off ok into 5th after making her run on the inferior part of the track at the Sunshine Coast last start. Races well at Doomben and gets up to her preferred distance now. Each way.

BM65 Handicap 1200m

NAVAL TRADER

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Jaden Lloyd

Comment: Lightly raced gelding who showed plenty of ability in his first preparation. If he’s come back even slightly better this time in, he will take some beating in this.

RICH LISTER

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Cejay Graham

Comment: Returned to form last time out when closing strongly to grab second over 1100m here in BM68 company. Has race fitness on her side now but will need some luck from a tricky draw.

Randwick-Kensington Wednesday August 2

3YO Maiden Plate 1100m

COSMONOVA

Joe Pride/Andrew Adkins

Comment: Well-bred filly having her first start. Has looked good at the trials, winning her latest by a small but convincing margin. However she will be giving away some valuable race experience to most of her rivals here.

Eagle Farm Saturday August 5

Open Handicap 1400m

BETTER GET SET

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/TBA

Comment: Won three on the bounce last prep, including at Listed level, and though winless in three runs back this time, she was second in the Gai Waterhouse at Ipswich before sticking on gamely in the Ramornie after enduring a wide run throughout. Looks beautifully placed back to an open handicap with 54.5kg.

Sunshine Coast Sunday August 6

Maiden Handicap 1400m

CHAIRLIFT

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/TBA

Comment: First-starter. Hasn’t shown up at the trials but is bred to get over a bit of ground so hoping she can hit the line strongly over 1400m.

Dalby Monday August 7

Maiden Plate 1400m

CHAIRLIFT

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/TBA

Comment: First-starter. Hasn’t shown up at the trials but is bred to get over a bit of ground so hoping she can hit the line strongly over 1400m.

Goulburn Monday August 7

BM58 Handicap 1600m

CREWMAN

Joe Pride/Tyler Schiller

Comment: Turned around his form with a strong win over a mile at Kembla last start. Finds a suitable race back to country level here and expecting he will strip fitter for his second run over a mile.
