The QLD winter carnival rolls into its second week on Saturday at Eagle Farm where SCALLOPINI and PALAZZO SPIRIT will fly the flag for Proven Thoroughbreds.
SCALLOPINI begins his path towards a potential Stradbroke Handicap berth in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) while PALAZZO SPIRIT (pictured) returns as a gelding in the Listed Dalrello Stakes (1000m) for 2YOs.
The meeting will provide an opportunity for Proven to build on a season that has already reaped 6 stakes winners, the latest being last Saturday when stablemates CANADIAN DANCER and TERANGA quinellaed the Listed Princess Stakes (1600m) at Doomben.
Of course, such results have only been made possible by the unbelievable run of success of co-trainers Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted. Since August 1 of last year, the stable has accrued the highest winning strike rate in Australia!
So the timing of our O’Dea-Hoysted open day at Kolora Lodge this Sunday could hardly be better. If you would like to attend please get in touch with us before close of business on Wednesday so we can appropriately cater for the event. Details are as follows:
WHEN: 11am Sunday May 1
WHERE: Kolora Lodge, 66 Moloney Rd, Loganlea, QLD (about 40min drive from Brisbane CBD)
WHAT: All 18 of Proven’s 2022 yearlings purchased for the O’Dea-Hoysted stable parading (including those that are fully sold)
WHO: Co-trainers Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted, stable rider Baylee Nothdurft, Kolora Lodge proprietor Peter McMahon, and Jamie & Tom Walter of Proven Thoroughbreds

BLACK BOOKER
STELLAR MAGIC didn’t have a lot of room over the concluding stages of the Listed Mick Dittman Plate (1110m) first-up but still managed to finish fourth, beaten only 1.5 lengths. Co-trainers Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted are looking at next month’s Listed Denise’s Joy Stakes (1100m) at Scone for this filly which will give her a great opportunity to snare a black type win against her own age and sex. She’s an experienced horse for her age and always runs well second-up.
Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners
Ipswich Wednesday April 27
Class 3 Handicap 1350m:
THINK GLORY
Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/Jaden Lloyd (a2)
Comment: Good return over 1200m at Doomben last start when finishing fourth behind some race fit horses. Unbeaten in two starts over this track and distance and has won second-up. Top chance.
Class 1 Handicap 1200m:
KARAOKE QUEEN
Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/Boris Thornton
Comment: Kept on the fresh side since running late for third over 1000m at the Sunshine Coast. Much better suited up to 1200m but will need to overcome a wide alley.
Sunshine Coast Friday April 29
BM68 Handicap 1300m:
HE KNOWS
Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/TBA
Comment: Looks ready to win after his fast finishing fourth at Doomben last start. Will relish the distance rise and is at peak fitness now having had three runs back from a spell.
QTIS 3YO BM62 Handicap 1400m:
COME CLEAN
Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/TBA
Comment: Gallant runner-up in heavy (10) conditions last month. Prior to that she caught the eye first-up here over 1200m. Has had a tick-over trial since and is crying out for this trip.
Eagle Farm Saturday April 30
Group 2 Victory Stakes:
SCALLOPINI
Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/Boris Thornton
Comment: Veteran galloper back for another winter campaign. Likely to find this a touch short of his best but has a terrific record at Eagle Farm and will be strong late.
Listed Dalrello Stakes 1000m:
PALAZZO SPIRIT
Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/Ben Thompson
Comment: Stakes winning colt resuming as a gelding. Will be interesting to see how much/if that improves him but all indications are that he is going well and will be in this for a long way.
Ipswich Monday May 2
Class 2 Plate 1350m:
VANTAN EXPRESS
Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/TBA
Comment: Promising 3YO back from a break. Will be better over further but his class might be enough to get him home here.
