Speed merchant KYLEASE returns to action on Saturday in the Listed Ascot Handicap (1000m) at Eagle Farm.

The daughter of CHOISIR was beaten a length in the same race last year and has since placed at stakes level and won a $125,000 feature race over Saturday’s course and distance.

Samantha Collett takes the reins for the first time and will ride on the 54kg minimum.

KYLEASE has earned more than $400k in 26 starts and an elusive black type win at this stage of her career would be invaluable for her broodmare prospects.

Another mare with residual value racing this week is RED RUBI, a metropolitan winning half-sister to our multiple stakes winner SCALLOPINI. By RUBICK, RED RUBI resumes from a spell in the 1000m Class 3 Plate at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.

Meanwhile last start winner THATFEELSBETTER will look to build on his 5:2-1-1 record when he contests the 1200m BM65 Handicap at Doomben on Wednesday.

BLACK BOOKER

MERSEYSIDE was strong late at the Sunshine Coast first-up. She travelled towards the back of the field in the 1200m event before running home with plenty of gusto to finish second, 1.5 lengths astern of the winner. She’s a lightly-raced filly that will improve as the distances get longer.

Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners

Doomben Wednesday April 13

F&M BM65 Handicap 1200m:

THINK GLORY

Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/Jaden Lloyd (a2)

Comment: First-up since November. Generally improves with racing and over a bit further so prefer to see for now.

CG&E BM65 Handicap 1200m:

THATFEELSBETTER

Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/Boris Thornton

Comment: Impressive winner fresh at the Sunshine Coast last start and still very much untapped. This looks a suitable progression for him.

HE KNOWS

Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/Jaden Lloyd (a2)

Comment: Back and wide at the Gold Coast second-up and couldn’t make an impression. Effort prior was good when runner-up at the Sunshine Coast. Won well here at the end of last preparation so capable of bouncing back.

Eagle Farm Saturday April 16

Listed Ascot Handicap 1000m:

KYLEASE

Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/Samantha Collett

Comment: Trialling well (as she always does) and went close in this last year. Up against a strong field but is down on the minimum and will be making her own luck on speed again.

Sunshine Coast Sunday April 17

Class 2 Handicap 1300m:

SECRET TALES

Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/Samantha Collett

Comment: First-up run at the Sunshine Coast earlier this month would suggest she is back on track after losing her way last campaign. Was always going to find the 1200m a touch sharp but she rallied well to finish third. Fitter now and will appreciate getting to 1300m, particularly if the track has some give in it.

Class 3 Plate 1000m:

RED RUBI

Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted/Boris Thornton

Comment: Not as prominent in trials this time in but was a dominant winner over this track and distance first-up last campaign.
