When DECLAN careered away from his rivals on Sunday at Wyong, it was like every maiden, a significant victory.

For every owner, regardless of what their horse achieves thereafter, that first win is always special.

Shedding the dreaded winless tag engenders a smorgasbord of emotions from relief right through to supreme joy.

The former is more commonly associated with the stress of expectation that had hitherto not materialised or a particularly close finish.

At the other extreme, a joyful reaction is often induced by surprise or the apparent ease of the victory.

For the many owners involved with the Joe Pride-trained DECLAN, Sunday’s 1100m romp was a stress-free, easy watch.

Even rider Adam Hyeronimus joked post race, “when he flew the gates it was pretty much game over.”

“It did surprise me how well he went!”

A couple of placings had kicked off DECLAN‘s career in his previous and only racing preparation before Sunday.

His recent trials had hinted that improvement was in the wind, hence is favourite status in the race. Yet the ease of his 4.5 length demolition was as surprising as it was impressive.

As with most of his graduates from the lowest grade, Joe has no ambitious plans for the three-year-old son of BRAVE SMASH.

However, his happy band of owners will not forget that sometimes elusive initial win, in a hurry.

A $50,000 yearling from the Inglis Classic Sale, DECLAN is yet another endorsement of the Proven-Pride-Goodwood Farm combination which has produced the likes of PRIVATE EYE, IN FLIGHT and KING’S SECRET.
