Connections of TERMAGANT breathed a collective sigh of relief after the mare made amends for a luckless defeat with victory at Doomben on Saturday.
It was two weeks prior at the Sunshine Coast when TERMAGANT made her way into just about every punter’s ‘blackbook’.
Just as she was about to explode through a gap, it closed abruptly, causing an almost catastrophic fall. Despite losing all momentum and still last at the 150m mark, the 4yo mare bravely picked herself up and surged late to just miss.
Fortunately, there were no such worries at Doomben a fortnight later, as rider Nikita Beriman was able to make amends with a perfectly executed ride.
The pair loomed ominously in the home straight before accelerating sharply over the final 100m to score by 2.3 lengths under only hands and heels riding…much to the delight of racing’s punting fraternity.

The ease of the win, and class record time, has trainer Matt Hoysted looking towards some feature races with the daughter of DEEP FIELD.
“It was nice to get a bit of redemption today after last start. Everything went to script today,” Hoysted said.
“Once she was able to hit top speed, gee she was impressive, especially over the last 100m where she really ripped away from the field.
“We will probably now consider setting her for the Military Rose Plate ($125,000 Handicap for fillies and mares) over 1100m at the Gold Coast on March 8.”
With a record that now reads 4 wins and 3 seconds from just 8 starts, TERMAGANT is improving at a rate that would suggest she will ultimately measure up to black type. Whether that comes this preparation or the next, only time will tell.
TERMAGANT is out of the late CANDIKA, a stakes winning mare also raced by Proven Thoroughbreds and trained by the then O’Dea-Hoysted stable.
TERMAGANT, a $260,000 yearling from the 2022 Inglis Easter Sale, is raced in partnership with her breeder Kia Ora Stud.
She becomes our 28th winner for season 2024-25.
Our other runners on Saturday certainly lost no admirers as THE BLACK CLOUD and TAKE A BOW ran game placings in their races at Randwick and the Gold Coast respectively.
