“She’s BROOK MAGIC Mach 2!”, beamed trainer Joe Pride after RUBINOCCHI disposed of her well-bred, more expensive rivals in the 2YO Maiden at Kembla Thursday.

The little bay filly reminds Joe of the five-time winning stakes placed BROOK MAGIC, a lucrative performer for PROVEN who retired 12 months ago.

At $45k, RUBINOCCHI was five grand more than BROOK MAGIC at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale but on the evidence of her impressive victory, will be earning in excess of her purchase price, something which may be in doubt for some of those who finished behind her. Third placegetter Authentic Jewel for example was a $650k yearling, as was the 4th horse Bullpen whilst Godolphin parted with $600k for the 6th home, Ultra.

It’s very easy to note the deficiencies of high priced yearlings but so many juvenile races in the metropolitan and provincial areas have increasingly become the domain of the elite so having a cheap filly reveal such talent early in her career, is mighty satisfying for all concerned.

Down the course on debut back in January over the same track and distance against older maidens, the RUBICK filly had displayed tidy speed in a recent trial on her home track at Warwick Farm but stepping from the Polytrack to a heavy surface is always a query.

After beginning well from a wide gate, the sweet actioned daughter of RUBICK put her more illustrious competitors to the sword winning by just under two lengths in a sharp 57.85s on the heavy surface.

RUBINOCCHI was win number 27 in 2021 for PROVEN THOROUGHBREDS and 54th for the 20/21 Season.
