Stable warrior SCALLOPINI posted his 10th career win in a familiar race at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.

Following an excellent sixth-placed effort when first-up in the Magic Millions Sprint (1200m) at the Gold Coast on January 15, SCALLOPINI claimed the Listed Sunshine Coast Cup trophy for the second time, having won the 2020 edition of the race.

Like in that 2020 triumph, jockey Boris Thornton was in the saddle and his navigation on Saturday from the outside barrier was nothing short of superb.

Thornton was able to slot SCALLOPINI into the slipstream of the leader having begun well from gate 14. It was then a matter of holding off the closers which the son of SNITZEL did gallantly, defeating the favourite OSCAR ZULU by 0.2 lengths.

SCALLOPINI’s 10th career win sees him become the most prolific winner ever for Proven Thoroughbreds and the training partnership of Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted, surpassing former stable star SIR MOMENTS on nine wins.

Ironically, SIR MOMENTS also won the Sunshine Coast Cup back in 2017.

SCALLOPINI was purchased by Proven Thoroughbreds for $200,000 from Yarraman Park at the 2016 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. Saturday’s win saw his prizemoney tick over $600,000.

At this year’s Magic Millions GC Yearling Sale, we purchased a filly bred on the same SNITZEL x MORE THAN READY cross as SCALLOPINI. She will also be trained by O’Dea and Hoysted.
