The final major yearling sale for the season – Inglis Easter – saw Proven Thoroughbreds purchase three fillies.
Proven and the O’Dea/Hoysted stable teamed up to acquire the DEEP FIELD x CANDIKA filly (lot 94) and the MAURICE x NETWORKING filly (lot 319).
Lot 152, a filly by ASTERN from ENCENITO, was privately acquired for clients of trainer Kerry Parker.
It would seem that nothing can impact the health of the horse racing industry as rising fuel prices and the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict failed to deter the appetite of buyers at the sale. Indeed, the average finished at a staggering $400,275.
Proven’s two purchases for syndication were sold for $260k + GST (DEEP FIELD x CANDIKA) and $300k + GST (MAURICE x NETWORKING).

DEEP FIELD x CANDIKA filly **80% SOLD**
Shares from $7,875 inc GST for 2.5%
“I loved CANDIKA – she was one of the best fillies I’ve trained – and I can see a lot of her in this girl. It’s a proven family too, with stakes winners all down the page.” – trainer Steve O’Dea.
KEY FACTORS
- The second foal from Proven Thoroughbreds’ stakes winning filly CANDIKA. The first foal (by ZOUSTAR) was sold for $520k in 2021 and the third foal (also by ZOUSTAR) is being retained to race by the breeder. CANDIKA sadly passed while foaling last spring so this is her last offspring to go to auction.
- A precocious daughter of SEBRING, CANDIKA was twice a pre-Christmas 2YO winner, before placing in the Magic Millions Classic behind CAPITALIST (first filly home) and winning the Princess Stakes over a mile as a 3YO. With prizemoney and broodmare sale proceeds, she returned $1 million to her owners.
- By one of the hottest young sires in Australia. Broke the all-time record for number of individual winners in his second season and was champion third season sire by winners and earnings.
- 20% share retained by the breeder Kia Ora Stud, 10% share purchased by the trainers Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted.
- From the same family as Group winners ASTRODAME, ULMANN, MAHISARA & ROCK CLASSIC.
MAURICE x NETWORKING filly **55% SOLD**
Shares from $9,000 inc GST for 2.5%
“We have a good opinion of this filly’s half-sister by NOT A SINGLE DOUBT and of course the full-sister was a Group performer as a juvenile last season so the family has plenty of upside.” – trainer Steve O’Dea.
KEY FACTORS
- By exciting and versatile Japanese stallion MAURICE – sire of dual Derby winner HITOTSU and multiple stakes winning sprinter MAZU! Already has an impressive 7% strike rate of stakes horses to starters.
- Full-sister to the Group 2 placed 2YO INVINISIBLE TEARS, also fourth in the Group 1 JJ Atkins last year and a winner at 3.
- Dam is a half-sister to Hong Kong champion PAKISTAN STAR, a multiple Group 1 winner up to 2400m and earner of more than $6 million in prizemoney.
- Broodmare sire INVINCIBLE SPIRIT has produced 32 stakes winners, led by Group 1 winners MASKED CRUSADER, DESERT ENCOUNTER & SOUND OF FREEDOM.
- Like HITOTSU & MAZU, this filly is from a DANZIG-line mare (14% stakes horses/runners).
