It’s a well worn cliche, but at last week’s Inglis Classic Sale, we really did ‘buy the ones we wanted’.
Armed with our usual short list of prospects, the expectation was to leave the auction with at least one under-bidder story.
But as luck would have it, Proven concluded its business with 7 yearlings, all of which were top seeded picks for their respective trainers.
Normally a buyer will have to stretch the budget to secure their first choices but our 7 yearlings were secured in a price range of $35,000-$180,000.
Since the Inglis Classic catalogue was expanded to 3 days in 2018, the clearance rate has declined, swinging the pendulum from the vendor to the buyer.
In fact, across the first two Australian sales of 2025, the number of horses sold has dropped 8.2% while overall investment is down some $25 million.
These market conditions have enabled established buyers to acquire yearlings for essentially discounted prices not seen since before COVID.
Another incentive to buy at this sale is of course the Inglis Xtra Race Series which schedules 50 maiden races every season worth $100,000 to the winner!
Note all share prices include the Inglis Race Series fee, insurance, veterinary costs, transport from the sales complex and all regulatory fees.
