Savabeel filly READABEEL was an astonishing maiden winner at Wagga on Sunday in her first start for trainer John Bateman.
After missing the start by five lengths, READABEEL unleashed an amazing finish to win by 1-1/2 lengths under Kayla Nisbet in the 1200-metre event.
Formerly with Joe Pride at Warwick Farm, READABEEL was switched to the easier jurisdiction of Goulburn in an attempt to curb her erratic racing manners.
And on Sunday’s win, the move has proven to be a positive one.
The filly relished the heavy (9) conditions and being given plenty of room to launch her finishing burst.
Bateman feels there are more wins in store for the lightly-raced kiwi-bred, which was bought for $NZ45k at the 2015 Karaka Select Sale from the draft of Waikato Stud where Savabeel stands.
READABEEL was Proven Thoroughbreds’ 20th winner for 2017 and John Bateman’s sixth winner from his last 16 runners (37.5% strike rate).
