The speedy ZATANNA could be headed for a $1 million race following a demolition job on debut last Saturday.
The daughter of ex-Proven galloper BROOK MAGIC lined up in an 800m maiden at Ipswich and went to the barriers as the $1.70 favourite.
She took the lead soon after straightening and bolted away to win by 6.6L from INVADING JILLY with ARATIRI in third.
ZATANNA clocked 45.89 for the 800m with the last 600m in 34.82, the fastest of the day.
A very slick debut by 2yo filly ZATANNA – winning by 6.5 lengths! A big thanks to @ODeaHoysted & @emilyyplang for all their work behind the scenes. Delighted to race her with @TelemonThoroug1 who stand her sire JUNGLE CAT. We also raced the stakes placed mother BROOK MAGIC. A… pic.twitter.com/y4OQTrVxU4

“She began well and pretty quickly we had a bit of pressure to the outside,” jockey Emily Lang said.
“When we came around the corner, I gave her a bit of a slap down the shoulder and she was off and gone.”
The $1million Magic Millions National Classic (1200m) at Doomben on May 25 will require further improvement but we are buoyed by Lang’s comments about this filly’s professionalism.
“She was in the gates for a long time, I was surprised with how well she handled it,” she said.
ZATANNA was purchased for $95,000 from the Telemon Stud draft of the Magic Millions Yearling Sale in 2023. We are delighted to race this exciting filly with Telemon who also stand her sire JUNGLE CAT. The dam BROOK MAGIC, a stakes placegetter for Joe Pride, was served by SPIRIT OF BOOM last year.
ZATANNA was just our second 2YO runner for the season and becomes Proven’s 18th winner for the year.
At the same Ipswich meeting on Saturday, SECOND SUN showed good improvement up to 1350m and is one to keep an eye out for as he gets towards the mile.
