IN FLIGHT and KING’S SECRET were undoubtedly Proven’s stars of the winter and they share one key characteristic that is anything but a coincidence.
They are both products of Goodwood Farm, a small but prominent thoroughbred nursery in the upper Hunter Valley where the likes of PRIVATE EYE, REBEL DANE, FLYING ARTIE, MANAWANUI & DANCE HERO were also born and raised.
For whatever reason, media coverage of racetrack success often overlooks the contribution of the farm/breeder.
The irony is that industry participants and indeed close followers of the sport remain acutely aware of its importance as the first phase of a thoroughbred’s transition to racing.
There are many factors that make a successful thoroughbred farm, from topography to climate to breeding philosophies. But ultimately these carefully curated properties are judged by one thing – results. Sure, they might sell their yearlings for big money in the sale ring, but can those yearlings run?
One vendor Proven Thoroughbreds will never hesitate to buy from is Pencarrow Stud, situated in the fertile countryside of New Zealand’s Waikato region.
Pencarrow’s honour roll has a plethora of Group 1 winners highlighted by legendary mare ETHEREAL, DARCI BRAHMA, DE BEERS, LINESMAN, RIVERINA CHARM, NOBLE HEIGHTS, STAR DANCER and more recently FEROCE, MAISON LOUIS and DUNKEL.
Only once previously has Proven been lucky enough to jag a Pencarrow product and that horse went on to be named GAMBLESTOWN. One of the most durable gallopers to don the black and lime, he raced for six consecutive seasons, winning multiple city races and competing at stakes level.
In June, Pencarrow hit 100 winners for the season – an achievement that reinforces why they have won NZ’s breeder of the year title on multiple occasions.
Being only one of a handful of Australian-based syndicators that attend the Karaka Sales, Proven had first-hand access to Pencarrow’s 2025 yearlings and we were delighted to come away with two of them – the ACE HIGH colt from SKYWARDS and the ALMANZOR x SLEEPING BEAUTY colt.
Shares are currently available in the ACE HIGH colt who trainer-in-waiting Joe Pride describes as a “beautiful specimen that looks more like a sprinter-miler than a stayer”. Joe’s observation is significant given the colt’s pedigree is predominantly stamina based.
The only sibling to race is the Group 3 placed KAZALARK while the second and third dams were both champions of their generation including the aforementioned Pencarrow graduate RIVERINA CHARM.
This colt is about to recommence training at Thenford Farm after stacking on the muscle during a beneficial winter spell (watch video below):
