In a testimony to soundness, constitution and above all temperament, stable favourite BETTER GET SET, recorded her fifth career victory and second Saturday triumph on the trot in the 1200m Class 6 Plate at the Sunshine Coast.

Having taken more than a year to lodge her fourth win, the daughter of BETTER THAN READY fought courageously to again land the prize. In a race that developed into a sprint home, the consistent mare quashed the non-winner criticism, reeling off a final sectional of 33.7s and lifting her earnings to over $280k.

“She’s having a great prep and is really in the zone”, said rider Ben Thompson who sooled her forward from a wide alley to sit outside the leader, Majestic Shot.

“She looks a treat and has obviously backed it up with another good performance. That last 100 she really dug deep for me and she wanted to win.”

Trainers Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted now plan to give the 5yo her chance in the Listed Just Now Stakes (1300m) exclusive to Fillies & Mares at Eagle Farm in 3 weeks.

BETTER GET SET is a lovely genuine mare who’s only twice been further back than 5th in 22 starts that have yielded 9 placings as well as the 5 wins. Whilst it was only Proven’s 8th victory since August 1, it’s a season that’s produced a whopping $5.3m in prizemoney.
