For all the millions of dollars traded at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, there are still opportunities to snaffle hidden bargains.
Proven Thoroughbreds has neither the resources nor desire to engage in the top end of the market which this year saw an incredible 25 yearlings realise 7 figures and the average up to an eye watering $450,000.
It goes without saying that most of the expensive yearlings don’t get near their price tag from either prizemoney accrued or on sale value.
But what Inglis Easter does guarantee is high quality pedigrees across the board. And with that, we have been able to acquire genuine racehorses without breaking the bank.
Since 2013, Proven has seen 14 Easter graduates hit the racetrack for an aggregate cost of $1.72million at an average of $122,857.
From that cohort of 14 racehorses, $3.637million in earnings have been generated, more than double the initial outlay. Furthermore, four of those 14 are still racing and have a good deal of upside – TERMAGANT, NAVAL TRADER, OCEAN ZAR & KING’S SECRET.
More than anything else, these stats reflect the quality buyers can access around the bottom to middle tier of the Inglis Easter catalogue.
In 2025, all three of our acquisitions were secured very late in the day, otherwise known as the graveyard period if you’re a vendor.
By the time we had bid on or negotiated our purchases, the auditorium was three-quarters empty, owing largely to the fact that most of the other buyers had already conducted their business earlier in the sale and effectively spent their budgets or met their KPIs.
And so we were able to buy a filly and a colt by ZOUSTAR as well as a SO YOU THINK colt for a total of $510,000.
Our initial expectation at this sale was that we would maybe come away with one yearling, but the value on offer towards the end of the session was impossible to ignore!
