There’s no doubting it was a strong sale, with some mammoth figures being thrown around, but when there is more than 1000 lots catalogued, opportunities invariably arise.
The last couple of years have seen Proven make a concerted effort to raise the quality of yearlings purchased and we believe this was again reflected at Magic Millions 2022.
Proven’s total expenditure at the sale was $2.115 million at an average of $192,273. The yearling prices ranged from $77,000 to $407,000 (inc GST) which allows us to cater for a broad spectrum of budgets.
Our Brisbane stable of Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted will prepare 10 of the 11 yearlings while Joe Pride (Warwick Farm) has been allocated the other.
We tend to focus on the O’Dea-Hoysted stable at this sale for the simple reason that the Magic Millions Summer carnival is on their doorstep. The upcoming Inglis Classic Sale will be where we focus on the Pride stable.

SPIRIT OF BOOM x FLOWER OF LOVE colt

“This is a beautiful combination of SPIRIT OF BOOM and REDOUTE’S CHOICE. He looks like a colt who will get up and run as a 2YO, which is what we have come to expect with the SPIRIT OF BOOM breed.” – Steve O’Dea.
KEY FACTORS
- This colt is the product of SPIRIT OF BOOM being mated with higher quality mares after taking the breeding world by storm in his first couple of seasons at stud. He was champion first season sire in 2017-18 with 5 individual stakes winners (the most since EXCEED AND EXCEL in 2008) and has since been crowned champion QLD sire for three years running.
- REDOUTE’S CHOICE is the broodmare sire of more than 220 stakes performers including Group 1 winners ANAMOE, PROFONDO, HITOTSU & REGAL POWER this season alone!

KEY FACTORS
- Regally bred colt from one of the best families in the Australian studbook ie the dam HISTORY REPEATS is a three-quarter sister to the all-conquering MORE JOYOUS!
- This colt was conceived in the season following ZOUSTAR’s historic trifecta in the 2018 Coolmore Stud Stakes and therefore coincides with when breeders’ confidence in the champion sire was sky-high.
- Outstanding value considering ZOUSTAR’s $154k service fee and his yearlings averaged $420k at Magic Millions 2022.
- Bred on the potent ZOUSTAR x MORE THAN READY cross = 12 winners (1SW) from 16 starters.

KEY FACTORS
- By an exciting first season sire THE AUTUMN SUN – a 5-time Group 1 winning son of the breed shaping REDOUTE’S CHOICE. His racetrack record finished on eight wins from nine starts and he remains the only horse in history to have annexed the Caulfield, Randwick & Rosehill Guineas.
- The first foal from IFFRANESIA (by SNITZEL) sold for $900,000 last year. This is the second foal purchased for just $150k + GST = incredible value!
- This genetic combination has already produced the record-setting 14-time Group 1 winner MELODY BELLE (by DANEHILL’s son COMMANDS from IFFRAAJ mare).
- IFFRANESIA was a 9-time winner over short courses in Europe, including a stakes success in France.
DEEP FIELD x OSTENTATIOUS filly

- From a family with an incredible strike rate, 19 out of 21 foals on the page are winners!
- The first foal out of OSTENTATIOUS is a multiple city winner in Sydney despite being by non-commercial sire DISSIDENT. This is her third foal. The latest foal is a weanling by exciting young sire CAPITALIST.
- DEEP FIELD is arguably the hottest young sire in Australia. Broke the all-time record for number of individual winners in his second season and was champion third season sire by winners and earnings.
- SHAMARDAL is the broodmare sire of more than 135 stakes winners including Proven’s Group 1 winner PRIVATE EYE!

SNITZEL x PALAZZO CRISTALLO filly **POPULAR**

“We were underbidders on this filly’s full-brother last year and there is no question this girl is an even better type. She looks a ready-made 2YO.” – Steve O’Dea.
KEY FACTORS
- Proven and O’Dea-Hoysted Racing were underbidders on the full-brother last year and we thought this filly was a vastly superior type so were determined to secure her.
- SNITZEL has been an extraordinarily successful sire with an elite 9.5% stakes winners/runners, 43 stakes winning juveniles, and Group 1 winners from 1000m-2040m.
- Strong 2YO type bred on the exceptional SNITZEL x MORE THAN READY cross = 28 winners from 29 starters (97%) including Proven’s multiple stakes winner SCALLOPINI.
- Second dam was a classy mare who won the Group 2 Villiers Stakes and banked almost half a million dollars in prizemoney.

DEEP FIELD x SEMPRE LIBERA filly

“This is a really impressive individual and I think will be earlier than most of the DEEP FIELDs. She’s got a deep girth, a great walk and is from one of the great female families of BOLD PROMISE, MERLENE and DEAR DEMI.” – Steve O’Dea.
KEY FACTORS
- Strong precocious type of DEEP FIELD filly and the only foal to race out of SEMPRE LIBERA – XERRI ($410k yearling) – won a metro 2YO race and was stakes placed as a 3YO.
- According to stud manager Peter O’Brien, this filly bears uncanny resemblance to close relation and Golden Slipper winner MERLENE.
- As well as MERLENE, this filly’s family includes other top-class females such as DEAR DEMI, BOLD PROMISE and MISS PENNYMONEY.
- DEEP FIELD is arguably the hottest young sire in Australia. Broke the all-time record for number of individual winners in his second season and was champion third season sire by winners and earnings.

KEY FACTORS
- This colt is the product of SPIRIT OF BOOM being mated with higher quality mares after taking the breeding world by storm in his first couple of seasons at stud. He was champion first season sire in 2017-18 with 5 individual stakes winners (the most since EXCEED AND EXCEL in 2008) and has since been crowned champion QLD sire for three years running.
- First foal from the stakes placed CHOISIR mare TELL ME who was a multiple city winner in Sydney and Melbourne.
- Like Proven’s SPIRIT OF BOOM 2YO stakes winner PALAZZO SPIRIT, this colt has a 3m x 4m duplication of DANEHILL.

CAPITALIST x TENANT'S TIARA filly

“This is a really nicely put together filly and looks like she’ll get out and run early. By a top young sire from a stakes winning and stakes producing mare, hard to find fault with this girl.” – Steve O’Dea.
KEY FACTORS
- From the stakes winning and stakes producing mare TENANT’S TIARA; dam of five city winners including 13-time winner and Listed victor ZOUTENANT (by commercial failure ZIZOU). Of her four other winners, three were also by failed stallions such as CONGRATS.
- CAPITALIST – a Golden Slipper winning champion 2YO, now champion young stallion with first season sire honours in 2021-22 and runaway leader in the second season sire rankings.
- Outstanding value at $130k + GST considering CAPITALIST’s yearlings averaged more than $220k at Magic Millions 2022.
- Like most of the breed, looks a precocious type that gives the impression she will be racing as a 2YO.
I AM INVINCIBLE x SHAMAL WIND colt

“This colt is on the smaller side like his mother but is very much a stronger version of her as a yearling. And we all know how good she was.” – Steve O’Dea.
KEY FACTORS
- Steve O’Dea’s first remark about this colt was his resemblance to the mother. Though on the smaller side, SHAMAL WIND was one of the best sprinters of her time, winning eight races, culminating in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate.
- By the best sire in the country who currently stands for a service fee of $220k + GST. Boasts elite strike rates, with winners to runners = 78% & stakes performers to runners = 15%
- Two foals have raced from the dam, and both are multiple winners.
- DUBAWI is a world class stallion and the broodmare sire of more than 70 stakes performers including 2-time Group 1 winner NAZEEF (by I AM INVINCIBLE’s sire INVINCIBLE SPIRIT).

“By Australia’s best stallion, bred on one of Australia’s best studs and trained by Australia’s….trainer!” – Joe Pride.
KEY FACTORS
- An exceptionally priced colt that sold for way under market value. The vendor Yarraman Park has confirmed full veterinary clearance and is still confused how he slipped through. One possible explanation is that he is bigger than most of the I AM INVINCIBLE breed and buyers invariably gravitate to a sire’s archetype.
- I AM INVINCIBLE is without doubt the best sire in the country who stood for a service fee of $220k + GST in 2021. Boasts elite strike rates, with winners to runners = 78% & stakes performers to runners = 15%
- Similar in physique to Proven’s multiple city winner INVINCIANO, another I AM INVINCIBLE yearling sourced for Joe Pride in 2017.
- The second foal from a nine-time winning and stakes winning mare.
- I AM INVINCIBLE x LONHRO cross = 10 winner from 11 starters, including stakes winning and Group 1 placed mare EVALINA.
